Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????
I`m having the same problem with my 3 yr old.
although i only ever find he behaves badly when i`m handling him,i don`t live with my dog only come home twice a month, the whole time i`m away he`s fine. Ive come to the conclusion he`s trying to protect me. I will only have him neutered as a last resort. At the moment i`m ignoring his bad behaviour and rewarding him when he`s good.which he is most of the time but he has his moments.I also find that when he is behaving badly towrads peopl he is backing off the whole time as if he is scared. Very confusing |

Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????
yes it is confusing i just dont no wat to do with him, we have to lock him away when we have guests and they are all asking about him but they cant see or play with him as he will snarl, bark and snap at them, and it shouldnt be like that i feel sorry for him because he cries as he can hear us talking

Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????
yep he was always around people from 8 weeks old, mines a very complicated situation,he wasn`t mine to begin with he belonged to my best mate who had a terminal illness, she lived with another mate of mine(who didn`t want the puppy so had not much to do with hm)sadly my best mate past away when he was almost 4 months old and left him to me in her will.I consequently moved in with the other friend and her bro.we always had people around and i took him to my mum and dads every sunday.
Unfortuanaltey the brother of my friend loved to play rough house with him,to the point my dog would go mental.Itried to instill into him that what he was doing was going to make him bad when he got older. Apparently he would still do it when i wasn`t there. I moved out due to personal reasons, and made it clear to my parents that they were not to do this,to which they haven`t thankfully. The behaviour has only started since i moved away 7 months ago, which is why i feel it has something to do with him protecting me. He hasn`t actually ever attcked anyone, but will growl and bark at people, but be fine with them the next day,it`s all very weird |

Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????
I guess it`s because i worked at a show kennels for 9 years and saw the effects of neutering on dogs,i`m getting more tempted to neuter him,it should make a difference but it will take a lot longer to show the effects

Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????
From what I understand, (and please someone correct me if I haven't got it right,) neutering a dog to stop certain issues occuring will only help if those issues are caused or increased by the hormone balance of the dog. We had our old gsd castrated in the hope that it would make him less aggressive to other dogs - it didn't work as his aggression wasn't caused by hormones.
