Re: is neutering/spaying always the best option????

I don't have any answers. It does sound as though the dogs are either protective and/or territorial.

Shep my parents Border Collie became as we assume territorial at the garden fence. He was ferocious if anyone passed the gate. We had to accompany him to prevent his behaviour. We soon realised it was one person who as he walked passed with his dog hit Shep with the lead. Well I'd be mad too wouldn't you.

By going out in the garden with him he soon settled down. Everyone's circumstances are different.

We have never had a male dog neutered, if I ran into problems I would as the first course of action.

Our dog get extremely excited when we have visitors which can be just as troublesome I exclude him from the room for a few minutes and try again and I repeat this, provided visitors ignore him it works and he will settle a lot quicker than if I left him to his own devices.

There is an injection you can try first if you prefer. You would need to speak to your vet.

Thats correct, cutting off a dogs b*****s will not alter learned behaviour, infact with some it makes them worse, they are no longer producing testosterone, which can make them feel more vulnerable.

You should never castrate a nervous dog. Otherwise then you should castrate unless you're going to breed. That's what I believe and that's our policy.

I believe a dog should not have to undergo unnecessary surgery. I wouldn't choose to own a bitch. That's my policy.

I have read on previous threads breeders prefer their pups to be neutered I would therefore comply with their terms and conditions.
