Puppy Transport

Hi all
Soon be collecting puppy and would appreciate some advice on transport home.
Journey of about 70 miles in a VW Golf. Puppy is a springer x cocker and will be 10 wks. Will be crate training at home.
Crate for travel? Size? Fabric or metal? Try and put collar on for the first time?

I was thinking fabric travel crate, a stuffed kong or two and a pit stop half way for the loo and drink.

Any suggestions appreciated
First time dog owner!
But v. excited.

Re: Puppy Transport

Hi, Will the crate you will be using at home fit in the car?
Has the puppy had its jags? If not then just put a puppy pad at one end of the crate.

Re: Puppy Transport

Home one too big
All jabs will be complete.
If he has a soft cushion in a crate in the car I am hoping he wont spoil it ! Wishful thinking?

Re: Puppy Transport

I would get a smaller metal crate for travelling in the car. If he started to panic or get stressed he could chew or claw his way out of a canvass one. My 2 younger ones I would never put in a canvass cage. I did once going to ringcraft and arrived to find they had managed to undo the zip and were standing behind the tail gate but infront of the crate. Little sods. Also in a metal crate you would be able to see him and he would see you if you talked to him.

I'd be wary of the kong, if puppy gets car sick it will come right back up! When I brought Roo home the breeder fed him a bit earlier so his tummy should have been empty but he still managed to be a bit sick, the only time he ever has been in a car though! (a VW golf too mind )

Re: Puppy Transport

I agree with Freyja. If you are planning on taking him in the car again, which is advisable so he is used to it incase you need to have him in the car, he will be much safer in a metal crate. And ''start as you mean to carry on'' I always say.

That's true. When my lot were off to there new homes I arranged with the new owner times so I could feed early so they hadn't eaten right before travelling.

Re: Puppy Transport

Thank you all.
Building up a good idea now of the journey home.
Will get a metal car crate, cheap pillow, chew toys with no food and ask him to be fed well before we collect.
How many stops in a two hour journey? If he nods off it will be no problem. Will he sleep in the car?
Will post a pic for you when I've worked it out.

Cheers
