Re: Puppy Transport

When I collected my pup we had a very long car journey. She was basically in the car from 10 in the morning till 7 at night so lots of stops. She wasnt vaccinated but I risked letting her out and she had some lovely walks which helped a lot. She travelled in a plastic travelling cage and screamed for the first hour without a break even when I tried her on my lap. I then used the cage in the car for the first little while but she was soon loose in the back behind a dog guard with the other dog. And she has never been sick which is wonderful!

Re: Puppy Transport

Awwh so cute! From experience, puppies usually fall asleep in the car. If he is awake and settled then he should be ok, if he is restless then he probably needs to pee.

Re: Puppy Transport

I brought my puppy home in the back of the car in a crate. Unfortunately, the breeder had fed him so he was very sick. I wish I had taken him home on my lap so I could have reassured him more because he is still very anxious in the car.

Re: Puppy Transport

When we fetched Holly she was 10 weeks old and I bought a smaller metal crate for the car and a larger one for the house. We had to travel about 60 miles and she cried for a little while to start but then settled and went to sleep. I put a small plastic bed and a blanket and a small Teddy in the crate. then when we got home I just swapped the bed into the home crate and left her to settle in her new home. Eventually she ventured out to see us and she was fine.

Re: Puppy Transport

When we have had new pups we always had them sit with passenger on their lap, ok I know its not a done thing having dogs on laps but with pups on their first journey seems to relax them, ours have just slept thro the journey, then gradually get them used to the cage for travelling.

Re: Puppy Transport

When we picked up Archie he was 12 weeks. It was a 5 hour journey but he just went to sleep on the back seat I had to go in OH's car and ha no room for a crate. He wore a little seat belt harness and apart from being sick after about 50 miles he was fine the rest of the way. We didn't stop just carried on he never moved. His breeder said he would cry if he needed to go to the loo but never did so we didn't bother stopping.

Holly came over from Belfast the ferry was delayed because of the weather and then they had endless hold ups on the motorway. It took 12 hours. They stopped a couple of times on the way down but Holly was older nearly 5 months and the others in the car were all older show dogs.

Re: Puppy Transport

Whether or not it was right.... i just sat in the backseat with our pup! Put a blanket on my lap and she slept (and farted and shivered)! The breeder did give us a mummy smelling blanket too - maybe you can take your own and rub it on the mum dog for the journey home too.

My mum told me some advice - if you get the dog really used to being in a car, you can take your dog anywhere you go without it being a problem. Totally true, our puppy comes everywhere with us, and she'll happily jump in/out now.
