Re: getting a springer spaniel!!

One thing that you will find about them Leah is they love training - they love to impress, makes their smiles even bigger and they tails wag even faster but if you dont correct bad behaviour they will learn that it is usual and therefore good.
Its the first time ive had a pup myself - my older is a retired sniffer and I was surprised at how much you have to watch them as pups. Picking things up (anything at all), weeing in the middle of the carpet - if you dont see the paws on your lap or looking towards the door to go toilet.
What I found is that you have to let them have some fun otherwise all you be doing is telling them 'ahah' so I would let him chew a pair of trainers but correct on a piece of furniture (he didnt do it much anyway).
Make you house dog proof things like sewing kits, paint brushes, family photos move them all out of reach
They are brilliant dogs and ones that learn and learn so be sure to stay consistent in your commands and dont let them slip. I can guarantee you lots of fun without doubt.
My pup was biting arms up until 3 months and they do hurt have to say.
Get her into a good sleep routine - at a very young age they cant hold their bladder so for a week or two you will have to get up around 2 am to take her out... mine was going out a 9pm, 12pm then 2am to sleep though to 6am

Girls different from boys a lot more cautious - they like to do things on their own terms whereas boys tend to jump straight in (bit like humans). Though do not think shell be weak -- a lot of Field Trail Champs are girls as they are so hardy, so expect so terrific walks in the future - and a lot of face licks too
a good website is breezeleaf spaniels..... under the pups for sale bit is loads of info though it is a good site to read through

I dont really know the relevance of the site posted above ?

edit: and theres more..... lol to stop biting do a high pitched.... "ow"! then move away and dont give her any strokes, they soon associate mums ows to no fun

since i`ve never owned a dog of my own i decided that they`re the best bet as they`re apparently very easy to train and great around kids (bit worried about the cat though!) i had one as a child and she was the best dog ever so i guess that`s what swayed my decision

best part is, my partner`s parents rang him shortly after i decided to say that one of their friends has a litter of 3 week old springers and that she`ll give us one really cheap as she`s known my partner for years! i spoke to her briefly and she said she doesn`t breed her dogs very often but when she does it for the love of the dog and not money. we`re going to visit the pups on saturday and view the parents, also pester her with questions to make sure we`re not making a mistake but i`m so excited i had to share!
If you are getting a working type, they can be very hard headed, and are stubborn, which makes them quite difficult at times to train, well thats only my opinion. But then again, we train also train cockers and labs which are very biddable, o i guess a springer could look different in my perspective to others that purely have springers. We sometimes sell our springer pups to homes with cats and they get along great, as long as you socialise well from an early age, like all dogs. As you said they are great with kids.
Lots of pics when the new arrival comes home

thanks, she`s from show dogs, the breeder is actually taking the dad to a show soon, we met both parents and they were lovely, mum was very calm and loved attention and the dad was hyper and wanted to play so i think she`s gonna be a great lil thing going by them

Re: getting a springer spaniel!!

Awwwh lovely pup
I'm sure your cat will be fine, cat's tend to get used to puppies quite quickly. Our two cat's didn't really bat an eyelied when the puppies were born, or when they started running about. They don't like Dave as much as Dixie but we already had Dixie when they came so that's probably why. That and the fact that Dave is quite hyper!

Re: getting a springer spaniel!!

she looks a sweety! Kepp the pics coming, show types do tend to be more relaxed than working types though they are still up for anything you want to do It will be a very long couple of weeks i can guarantee it. Bet you £5 you get another enjoy

Re: getting a springer spaniel!!

Congrats on your choice

I grew up around dog but my first dog was a springer who i still have, named Barney. He's fantastic dog, he's not a dog that's keen to kids but if they throw him a ball then he's happy.

Also via the cat thing i'd like to show you a video;

YouTube - Barney & Sassy

Barney is fantastic with cats despite my current cat (not the kitten in the video) has attacked him many times, in truth he's afraid of the cat

They are great dogs and Barney is super smart and was so easy to teach tricks and stuff, good luck
