Assistance dogs

Nearly all of us on here would be horrified if a dog had had 4 homes by the time they are 2 years old, so why are we so accepting of assistance dogs having to go through this?
Where they are born, puppy walker, training centre then hopefully final home.
I can't get my head around this, but I would hate for people to be without them.

Re: Assistance dogs

Interesting Rona,
Maybe it's because they are not brought and then "unwanted".

I believe these dogs are gifted to charities such as these and I would imagine it's part and parcel of their training.
They are wanted and more so needed dogs to help those with difficulties.

Has anyone seen the story of Endal, the assistance dog ?

Re: Assistance dogs

I have read the book 'Endal' and found it very interesting.

They truly are amazing dogs, yet I have never thought of their life not being very settled. Thinking about it, it makes me feel sad to think they are such loving and loyal animals, but they may not always have a forever home. If something happens to their owner, they may not stay with the family.

They do so much in the first few years of their lives, and are a gift to all who meet them.

The same as with anyone else, but I can't imagine it happening.
I would either step in or report them

Re: Assistance dogs

I presume that the dogs are moved to different homes to get them used to going to different places as par for the course and give them the confidence to be anywhere. I would also imagine that it is part of the socialisation of the dogs ready for being placed with their owners needing assistance.
