Argentine Dogo

For as long as i can remember i have always wanted a dog of my own, the only problem being that it is under the dangerous dog act. The Argentinian Mastiff has always been the dog of my dreams (obviously i have never met one face to face but i hope that changes) and i have always wondered if to own one was phisically possible within the uk.

I have been told by others that it depend on wolf content as wether i can own it or not, but as far as i am aware n there is no wolf content in the breed what so ever.

So i came to the conclution to ask you guys and gals to see what you think...

I also know that to own a dog under the dangerous dog act means no life for the dog, e.g tagged, snipped, tattooed, musseled etc.

Re: Argentine Dogo

There's no wolf in the Dogo Argentino (other than the ancestry common to all dogs), they're bred from the extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog with various other things to be the ultimate boar hunting dog, with which they will fight to the death. You would not be able to legally own one here, although it's doubtful that anyone would know what it was. I wouldn't consider getting something like that if you've not owned a dog before, as it's a dog for experienced owners.

Re: Argentine Dogo

I am not getting into the merits and shortcomings of the DDA but are you an experienced dog owner?

I may be wrong but these dogs I don't think are for people who are not highly skilled in handling dogs, especially large dogs.
Argentine Dogo Dog Breed

This is a leaflet about the regulations
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welf...ogsleaflet.pdf

Sounds like a lot of hassle to me, what if he slips his lead or gets out of the back garden and someone complains then you could face the police, court and potentially having your dog put down.

Just wondering why you would still want to own a dog with these limitations of the DDA regulations? Surely it would be better to own a breed that you could take out with you wherever you wanted, and that could have the freedom of any other dog?

Not wanting to cause arguments, just thinking aloud!

Re: Argentine Dogo

i have owned dogs previously and have quite a bit of experience with larger breeds also its only for future reference.

obviously i wouldnt want to own the dogo with the restrictions as there would be no life worth living like that, i only question as i previously stated i am infactuated with the breed itself and now i have had it confirmed by others i can try to forget about the possibility of owning one. lol

I appreciate everyones awnsers thank you

Its a shame because I have to say they are very handsome dogs

Ha! You're so right! Personality = mischief in Lizzie's case!!!

So what other breed of dog do you think you might get if you cant own a dogo? Or was it just that you had your heart set on that breed?
