Re: hubby wants a dog

Whatever dog you decide on should be wanted by both of you.

Since you are a little fearful, I would suggest that you sit down with your husband and give him some idea of the dog you would be happy with. Perhaps you could come to a compromise and go for a medium size dog.

A little research goes a long way, so try googling some facts on the breeds that you like. Spaniels are always a popular choice, as are Labs and Retrievers.

Good luck.

Re: hubby wants a dog

Hiya
First of all you both need to agree on having a dog, and also what size, you don't want to end up with one that you can't go near! My uncle always had gsd cos he liked them but my anuntie could never go anywhere near them because she was scared! Perhaps meet him in the middle and have a medium sized dog like you said a spaniel (springer).
Or something of similar size! Do plenty of research and good luck if you go ahead and get a dog!

Re: hubby wants a dog

Hi

before you get a dog be sure you both want it - if you get a dog and your scared of it then it will pick up on that.

You need to do lots of research - why dont you go down to your nearest puppy class for the evening and talk to the owners and people there - then that way you can get a feel for different dogs.

This certainly isnt something to rush in to. take your time and be happy about the decision you make.

keep us posted susie.

I had this same discussion with my other half. Our beautiful cat had just been run down outside our old house and I vowed I couldn't have another one cos it was so awful to lose him like that. We discussed getting a dog but I didnt want a big dog as I knew I wouldn't be disciplined enough, and he wanted a 'proper' dog.

Choice was in the end down to us getting a rescue dog that we were asked to take who is a cocker spaniel. she is really soppy and so obedient. Since the day we got her she has been brilliant. He's def not afraid of taking the lead lol. We have now got an even smaller puppy and he was not sure at the time but already loves her perky character.

A spaniel is a great compromise as they are not too big and are so lovable, loyal, easy to train and very clever. Should satisfy his need for a mans dog as they are good hunting dogs which makes them sound manly lol. Not that ours ever hunts, but she can soon fly if she sees a rabbit on the run!

Good look in finding a new member of the family, once you have one you will never look back!

Re: hubby wants a dog

I don't know what other people think of this, but i'd say its better not to ger a very small dog if you are scared of big dogs, because from what i'v seen small dogs pick up on their owners fear a lot more (possibly because of their size, they feel like an easy target anyway) and can be more likely to become agressive towards other dogs and possesive over their owners, which i think can make them nippy.
I'v not owned a small dog myself, but this is what i'v seen from people i know who have bought small breeds because they are scared of big dogs.

Dogs with a very laid back nature, like labradors might be better.. they are larger dogs like your husband wants but they tend to be completely soppy and train well. Especially if you buy from a breeder and can see the natures of the parents.

Good luck with what ever dog you get! I'm sure you'll soon be wondering what on earth you were scared of.

Re: hubby wants a dog

All I can say is that I had a phobia of dogs. When my parents realised they decided to get a puppy. I didn't get a choice of breed that was my parents decision.

They chose a Dalmation, as a child 101 Dalmations was one of my favourite films.

What I am trying to say is the Dalmation didn't frighten me. She arrived as a puppy and I never looked back.

It is important that you are comfortable with the choice of dog whether it be large, medium or small.

I was always unsure of cats, I have found they are more unpredictable than dogs. I also have a cat.

Re: hubby wants a dog

I think there has been alot of good advice here. Retrievers, and Labs are well known for being very friendly and laid back. Our lab is like a 70# tedddy bear. His attitude is "love me hold me play with me". I have to get after my littelist for trying to ride him. He will put up with anything. I would go with a rescue whatever you choose because the foster family can give you an idea of their temperment and likes and dislikes. They will fit a dog to match you. Puppies are alot of work and there are so many really good dogs in rescues.
