My dog doesn't like the veg but I mix it in very well with Tripe - the smell is so strong it fools him!

Re: Raw feeding - didnt go quite to plan.

Mine all have tripe BUT I just buy the frozen stuff and defrost it naturally (DO NOT PUT IN THE MICROWAVE TO DEFROST...OR YOU WILL HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR HOUSE GAGGING AS I DID!!!!!!!). When it's defrosted naturally it doesn't smell, it only smells when warmed up. And the dogs do love it, infact I think it's my lots favourite.

Can I just say this thread isn't about the rights and wrongs of raw feeding, last time I checked it's was a free world and we are all allowed to make choices ourselves so if anyone feels strongly enough about it please feel free to contact me and I'll give you my vets phone number who will confirm the health of all my dogs, and actually of his own since he's now feeding his raw too. I don't lecture you on feeding your dogs commerical food so please respect our rights to choose. Any other comments please start your own thread about it cos it's intruding on our drooling over gameskeepers and such.

Not totally ideal but have you tried Natures Menu? They have a range of frozen nuggets that have all the veg etc included. I'm not 100% sure but they might have the bones crushed in the meat (as they do with the standard range) but if you give them a ring they'll be able to advise better.

Re: Raw feeding - didnt go quite to plan.

Mine are both raw fed, and I've introduced oldies unused to the diet onto it without a problem.

The best 'starter' I've found is chicken wings, as advised, and either holding on to the tip and encouraging chewing that way, or bashing them up with a rolling pin first so they can't choke on larger bits of bone if they swallow them. This means that until they learn to chew they won't get the benefit of the bones helping to keep their teeth clean, but better that than a choking risk if they try and swallow a large bit whole.

As for the choking risk, mine have occasionally brought up food, and then eaten it again. The main risk from choking is if your dog is quite food possessive and you feed it quite close to another dog, this goes for any type of food, dogs fed on complete all their lives have been known to choke. Smaller breeds that sometimes posset their food (gulp in large mouthfuls to the back before chewing) are more at risk than larger breeds from the reading I have done.

Good luck with the raw feeding, mine look the picture of health on it.

Re: Raw feeding - didnt go quite to plan.

One of my raw fed dogs has just had puppies. She comes from 5 generations of raw fed dogs. I took them along to the vets yesterday to have their dewclaws removed and a check up. He couldn't believe they were only just 3 days old, due to their weight and general condition, he pronounced them A1. He then checked the mother over and said it was hard to believe she had just whelped, again in excellent health and condition. I weighed her and she is 37kg which is what she was in February when she had her eyes checked out.
Obviously if you want to feed commercial food go ahead, please remember that it is the absolute scrapings from the abbatoir dried and then sprayed with additives to make it smell appetising, because otherwise dogs wouldn't eat it. Never had to have mine to the vets to have their teeth cleaned either, the bones they have every day sees to that.
