New Pup, need help

My Bitch had a litter of pups, in which we kept 1, he is 14 weeks old now, and been really good, peeing & pooing on the paper, sitting before treats, we really thought we were getting progress with him.

Until this week, he was left in the house with his Mum for 2 hours, we came home to find he had chewed a huge hole in the carpet.

We got the carpet sorted & locked them both in a room, the next time we went out, only to come home & find, he has managed to chew through the plasterboard & had completely destroyed his bed????

Why has he suddenly decided to start this behaviour, and how can we get him to stop???

HELP!!!!!!!! I have 4 dogs & have never had this problem, with any of the others, so I am taking bad???

Re: New Pup, need help

It maybe a good idea to crate him when you go out and make sure he has plenty of things to chew on as he will be teething.

Re: New Pup, need help

I'm not a crate fan, I'd be more inclinded to try and wear him out before you go out and make sure you leave anything valuable out of his touch and LOADS of good chewy toys. I had a foster once that gnawed on anything and everything and I just went to the charity shop and stocked up on toys!!! I'm sure it's just a phase so fingers crossed he grows out of it!!

Re: New Pup, need help

I would say either crate him or give him chew toys and praise/reward whatever for chewing them. At 14 weeks he's going to be chewing things like crazy. Obviously you can't walk him very much but before you go out do some training and tire him out a lot before you leave.

Re: New Pup, need help

thanks for that advice, but on those 2 particular days, he had his walk in the morning, he played out in the garden all afternoon with his mum, so we thought He would have been exhausted, he has loads and loads of toys!!!

I got a crate from a friend yesterday, so gonna try that, I Know he is gonna hate it & probably create havock, but dont know what else to do, I want him out of this habit as I am due to have a baby in 7 weeks time??????

Re: New Pup, need help

Congratulations on the baby. Try putting the crate down, when he goes into it himself reward him, feed him in there and putting his bedding in there. He'll quickly learn its a good . You have a lot of work to do in 7 weeks training him to get used to a baby.

Re: New Pup, need help

I used carrots that I had put in the freezer when Fey was teething, it really helped sooth her sore gums and fair play she stopped chewing the furniture I akso placed her toys in freezer after dipping them in cold water or goats milk to make them more interesting when she was chewing

Good luck with your pup xx

Re: New Pup, need help

This destruction could be one of two things...or both!
He might be teething and as babies do needs to take some of the irratating pain out by chewing...
Or
He is bored. Bordeom leads to destruction, and no normal dog when they are teething chew holes in carpets
What breed is he?
How often do you walk him?
How long are the walks?
Do you play with him a lot?

well I am not sure whether he has chewed the carpet, or its been his claws at digging??? He is a border terrier, he gets 4 walks a day & on that day he had his usual walks & the rest of the time, he played in the garden with his mum, I am always playing with him, he gets loads of attention from myself & husband.

Plus he has his mother there as a playmate, so he is very active.
