Chicken Wings

I dont wish to hijack the bone thread, so i will ask this here.

After reading a lot of testimonies about feeding chicken wings, i think its something i want to try, but just as the odd treat.

Has anyone EVER had a problem caused by the bones? And how many should i give at one time if i use them as a meal replacement? I have two SBT types.

I know my boys would love them, but i am worried about what would happen if they swallowed them, rather than crunched them. Something im sure they will do, as they will pig things if they think the other is going to get it, even though i do seperate them when they have fresh bones.

Re: Chicken Wings

Not read the other thread re. bones, but I have always steered clear of any chicken bones with pets as they splinter.

And once they have a bone, I wouldn't be able to get it back if it splintered.

Re: Chicken Wings

You could try chopping them up so they are in swallowable sizes if your really worried.

However i would just give one or two at a time, not as a meal replacement, more a treat - unless you are planning on switching to a partially raw diet?

If you think they might just scarf them down, what about feeding turkey necks or lamb ribs instead?

they will only splinter if they are cooked. all bones should be fed raw. NEVER feed cooked bones.

Re: Chicken Wings

I give mine chicken wings, obviously uncooked!!! the first time I gave them to my youngest she stood and looked at them and my oldest one stole em!!! She ain't done it since. I do know people who mince em up thought for some breeds! but don't reckon yours will have any problems!!

ive never had a problem Nonnie & the 3 youngest have been having them since they were small pups, mine sometimes scare me cos they barely chew them but theyve always been fine, if youre worried try holding them with a pair of plyers to make sure they dont bolt them down

Re: Chicken Wings

i know someone fed chicken wings to their dogs and it must have been a scary experience seeing that long bone coming out the other end after being swollowed whole as they never fed chicken wings again after that lol

I think it depends on the dog how it acually eats it.

A friend of mine's dog once got a whole chicken carcass once and although he didnt each much of it before he was caught he was quite ill from it the splinters had cut him as it went down and he undigested parts actually scratched the bowel trying to pass it he was losing blood for quite a while everytime he poo'd. so after that i have always been very carefull with mine when chickens around.

Re: Chicken Wings

I have a problem feeding raw chicken wings..........

They wont eat them. Well not entirely true the youngsters love them Zoe loves them so does Button. The older whippets will eat them on odd occassions but William wont even look at them infact he wont touch them he thinks you're trying to poison him I have to hold them for Jasper as he'll just try to swallow them whole.
