A paranoid new puppy owner?!?!

Hello all..

yes me again!!!

Ok just been back to let the puppies out at lunch time and they look exhausted! usually they are running around pleased to see me and running in the garden etc!

But today they had their food (which they were equally excited about) and then just went and lay down they didnt want to run around and play etc! They have plenty of water and toys etc and are usually fine!

When we were walking last night - another lady said that we were walking them too far for new puppies? we walk them half an hour at 6:30am and half an hour at about 9:00pm (when its cooler) they are still exploring as only 12 weeks and only been on their walks since Friday! They love their walks and arent looking tierd etc!

I read somewhere that you should only take new puppies for a total walk of 1 mile a day! i am really confused now! can anyone help? Are we walking them too far/not enough???

Thanks again in advance

Re: A paranoid new puppy owner?!?!

i think the rule of walking is 5mins for every month of age
so they should only be getting 15mins 2-3 times a day i think but im sure someone will be along to say for sure.

what breed are they?

Totally agree with this Daynna, it seems to be the norm with those in the know,
5 mins for every month of life x 2 a day

5 mins per month is the basic guideline but it depends on the breed and specific dog.

Do they get time in the garden to run around?

I'd say work on the 5min rule as your foundation but keep an eye on your pups, if they are tired and lag towards the end then reduce it, if they are still full of beans then increase a little bit.

Keep an eye and go with your gut.

thanks for this! we go for a walk at 6:30am for a half hour walk and they get fed when we get back. they then have the run of the kitchen and garden until 8:30am when my partner goes to work.

They are then left in the kitchen free to roam.

They then have an hour at lunch time when they are fed and let out in the garden to run around for an hour

They are then left in the kitchen free to roam.

At 6pm i get in from work and they get fed and then have the run of the kitchen and garden until walk time. which depending on how hot it is starts between 8-9pm for half an hour. Then when they are back home they get the run of the whole downstairs while we are watching tv and allowed in the garden as the door is open the whole time!

When they are on their walks they seem to really really enjoy it and dont seem tired or lagging at all! but maybe half an hour is too long?

They are two beagles

Re: A paranoid new puppy owner?!?!

So they get plenty stimulation when at home, I think you're right to decrease the time of their walks.

If you're worried about them having too much energy then do some more training at home, mental stimulation is the best way to wear a dog out.

Admittedly, I don't know much about beagles, but bullmastiffs are extremely stoic, so I have to keep a very close eye for discomfort.

Its a fine line, but you'll work it out.

Re: A paranoid new puppy owner?!?!

yeah maybe decrease their walking time at least for the next month.

Lets not forget also that its rather hot outside. Dogs and heat in this country don't go well together, that's why i always take mine out in the evening when its a bit cooler.

And also you have puppies. They tend to sleep a lot anyway

Give me Max!

Re: A paranoid new puppy owner?!?!

As the weather is nice and the pups like being out, maybe you could just sit for part of your outings and then they are still in an exciting environment which will be stimulating to them. Beagles love using their noses so they should be happy to snuffle around in the grass, maybe hide something for them to find.
As they are beagles, you should be able to increase their exercise levels reasonable quickly

Yes I would agree they only need short walks. The 5 minute per month is a very good guide and as they are puppies and their bodies are still growing you will not want to strain them too much as it can damage their bones and joints if overdone at this age. otherwise they have a very good routine and sound very happy little dogs.
