apparently its true but im sure in college i were always told the smaller the heart then tend to like shorter lives, but the vets say the smaller dogs live longer average age for small dogs that we get in that are gettin on is bout 16-18 had few 20s before and bigger dogs tend to be 10-12

dnt know why though hopefully someone else will answer

i wonder if its because bigger dogs have extra weight on thier joints and internal organs

Like over weight people are meant to die earlier because of the extra pressure it puts on them

I was in Whitby with my two the other week (EBT'S) and a lady came over to say hello as she used to have one, she said he lived to be 21!
Not really a theory, but they're quite bigs dogs, and it seemed a nice long life.
I home mine live to be 21, well so long as they're still happy and healthy too!!

A lot of the giant breeds have really short life spans Irish Wolfhounds, Bernese mountain dogs etc. From what I've seen smaller dogs live longer my aunts chi is 18. But some of the smaller dogs have short life spans too pekes are 10-12 years so it's just the breed I guess.

Yes smaller dogs do tend to live longer than big dogs. our Yorkie lived for 16 years and my friends was 17 years.

Wish woody had lived that long Oh well life goes on.

I always thought all dogs had the same life span.

No it all depends on the breed some have really long life spans and then theres the Irish Wolfhound and BMD at 6-8 years . Most tend to be about 12-14 though.

From the dogs I have been aware off it certainly does seem to be the case!
There is a lot more strain on the heart of a Great Dane say then of a yorkshire Terrier!

However - there will allways be exceptions!
I do think a healthy diet and execise regime can prolong the life of any dog! and when I did change my insurance the other day the guy on the phone did actually say 'dogs are living a lot longer now!

Small dogs have longer life expectancy than large dogs. There's plenty of studies to support it.
