house training tips???

Hiya everyone,

I've just recently got a terrier mix puppy, he is 9 weeks old, and until now has been kept outside, where he could go toilet anywhere he wanted. I now need to house-train him, any tips??
I've tried putting him outside once he's eaten but he cries and yelps, do I just need to be stricter?? Also, if I'm out at work or at night he is kept in the kitchen with newspaper, but he tends to use it for pee, but not for poo!!!
Any help would be much appreciated. Also, how long did it take for you to housetrain your little ones??

Re: house training tips???

i believe housetraining just requires total dedication and discipline on the part of the human. Most pups cannot be classed as fully housetrained until 6-9 months.

You must always accompany your pup outside on waking, after meals, after play and when you return from leaving it. Then, dont let it back in until you have seen action.

You must always know when the last poo and wee was. It takes about a week to get into a routine. Then, you will start to trust the pup, and it will let you down. When caught in the act you can then not praise and remove pup and it will get the picture.

My pups werent housetrained when they left at 8 weeks but we had very few accidents as i knew their schedule and made sure i was outside. My current pup who is 4 months is totally reliable but i still accompany him outside so i know i am preventing him from letting himself down and am creating a ingrained habit.

So no real tips but just reduce the opportunity for them to make a mistake indoors but keeping on top of their routine. Sorry to rant!

Re: house training tips???

I was lucky, Dylan was paper trained before i got him at 8 weeks so it's been relatively easy going

I put him out after every meal, play and nap...along with an hourly pop out just for good measure and whenever we get back from a walk.

He mainly goes outside except overnight when he uses the paper. We have had the odd 'accident' but nothing serious and i just ignore it, clean it up and carry on....the ones done outside get lots of praise and a treat

He's only 10 weeks old now but doing very well, im proud anyway LOL It takes time and patience...rome wasn't built in a day as they say.

I'd thoroughly clean 'accident' spots to prevent re-occurrence and remove scent but would lay paper there just in case.

Yours is already going outside so i'd continue to encourage that

Re: house training tips???

Your pup needs to go out at least every hour, and most likely times for toileting are before or after play/sleep/eating or when excited. At this age, training is all about conditioning rather than rules and regulations so when he/she toilets outside, remember to give LOTS of praise, let them know what is the right behaviour. I don't really know why I'm giving you advice though, as my 10 week old pup has piddled on the floor three times today already!!! She's usually so good too...

Re: house training tips???

I wouldn't bother using the newspaper. You'll have to retrain them off the newspaper to go outside.

Take him out every 20 minutes or so, especially after play, food, or sleep. Keep any eye out for any sniffing because that's usually a sign that they're looking for a place to go.

Take him out before you go to bed/work and if you can take him out sometime during the night. Also take him out first thing in the morning.

Patience is all you need. It won't take that long to housetrain but it will feel like forever.

Oh, and don't talk to him when you take him out at night and if he does his business outside praise him quietly. Also don't give him a row if he messes in the house. Pick him up and put him outside without a word.

Re: house training tips???

with Poppy our older bitch who is 3 half now it took about 6 months to train her

But the little one who is 13 months old now we have had only one Wee in the house and that was the OH's fault as he was on the phone at the time. We crate trained her, Puppies will not like to go in the crates as it is there bed, so they will let you know when they want to go out. we took Meg out after waking up, feeding, playing, etc and at least every hour to start with, and it worked well. Even now she will whine and let you know if she wants to go out, she loves her crate and only goes in it at night time, to sleep, the rest f the time she has free run of the house. so good luck, i'd get rid of the paper training and buy a crate best thing i did
