Re: walking the dogs on a hot day

I walk billy first thing on the school run, and today he got an evening run instead of an afternoon one. He likes to run in the woods (cool and shaded) and into the stream too so i suppose he has a nice chance to cool himself anyway

In the UK dogs are not really used to the temperatures that we are getting at the moment so will struggle to cope with it especially double coated breeds such as huskies and malamutes. My whippets do not like it, ok the younger ones would love to play outside but they will run round what ever the temperature the older ones do not like it they put themselves in their crates and just go out to have a wee when they want then straight back in to sleep. If such fine coated dogs as whippet don't like it I cann't imagine many breeds that will.
Yep, thats true (i guess it depends on what conditions they are born into and used to) - just like us humans .

But i would imange for example a dog like a Doberman, would they be able to cope with heat better than a long haired dog ? or ones with big flat faces (better than the cold, thanks to there short hair)

Although no dogs like extreme weather conditions (extreme hot, cold, rain, snow ect)

Re: walking the dogs on a hot day

As i understand in places like australia many have pools which the dogs use, most long haired/ thicker coated breeds are clipped and many are housed under the house where cooler.
Just think they get temps higher than this most of the time, we will get a few days a year if we r lucky

Re: walking the dogs on a hot day

I walk early morning and in the evening and only walk places with a water source, i.e. rivers, lakes, ponds.

And generally just play with them and do some extra training indoors.
5 minutes of getting them to practice commands wears out their minds.
These are fab tips as I was thinking the same thing, having just got Lucy, who is full of beans and needs a lot of physical exercise and mental stimulation.

I would say do as much of that as possible during the day and then go for a long walk in the evening, when it is much cooler.
