Countdown until Friday....

Hi All!

Max and Daisy (Our two beagle puppies) are finally allowed out for their first walk on Friday!

Does anyone have any tips for a first time walk? I know this may sounds silly but are there best places to go to first/avoid?

Thanks

Re: Countdown until Friday....

My lord what possessed you to get 2 beagle puppies at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blimey I hope you like alot of exercise and training classes!!!!!!

Seriously though enjoy them, try to relax and just let them be dogs (as long as it's safe to do so of course). Socialisation, socialisation and socialisation!! Do you have any friends with sensible older dogs? They need a mentor dog to remind them of manners cos they'll learn nothing off each other!! I have fostered a good few beagles in my time and with the correct handling they are beautiful fun little dogs but you do need to put the work in now! It's never too late to start training especially with beagles!!!

lol well yes im not sure what we were thinking!?! we are at work in the day and although someone pops in every lunch we were hoping that they would keep each other company!! which they are! they love playing with each other and after a few teathing problems in the first week are coming along great! we are booking intp puppy lessons asap too

I have benn to lots of puppy lessons in the past with other dogs so have picked up a few bits! They can sit and stay very well now and they understand when I say bed!

We have an older dog next door and a few friends and family who have older dogs who i am hoping they will look up to!

Up until now they have been fab but i am a bit worried about them on their first walk! Although saying that they are great around children and visitors and are friendly towards our neighbours dog (from a distance )

We live near a very big park so wasnt sure whether to head there in the evening?

Re: Countdown until Friday....

I'd go to the park, obviously they'll be on lead for a while so you can ensure they are safe. I'm not a fan of 2 puppies at the same time, esp being left cos unfortunatley while of course they entertain each other they do also not learn the proper way to behave but with good classes and dedication you'll make it.

When I had Sidney as a puppy (only ever had one cos all my other dogs are older rescues) I made sure he was off lead from the first moment but I did have older dogs who had good recall so he'd come back when I called them, and also I walked on a long pathway where I could see other people/dogs coming and get him back before he met them.

Maybe worth investing in a couple of long leads (or just buy 2 horse lunge reins if you have a horsey shop nearby ..they are cheaper than long dog leads) so you can let them have a good old run about but also keep control.

Big parks are fab for socialisation but only if the other owners are responsible. It's always a worry to me that some of the dogs won't be hugely friendly and with 2 youngsters you need all there first impressions to be positive ones.

Loads of luck...I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see piccys!!!

Re: Countdown until Friday....

Thank you for that! We have ordered two training leads which were 30m so hopefully that will be a start! We also have short leads which I will keep them on at first. Also been looking into a local dog trainer who does recall training which I think will be worth while?

I will definitely be warey of other dogs! its not a hugely busy park as we also live next to miles of fields and downs so most people walk their dogs there! Alot of the dog owners we know that are local as all very friendly etc so hopefully all will fo well!

no doubt they will pick up bad habits from each other - but at the moment it is working in our favour. As one picks it up and the other doesnt then they copy each other and are slowly learning that when one gets praised they need to do the same

have attached some pics too!

i love the pics, gorgeous darlings! Did you get the perfect puppy book? Was it useful?

Re: Countdown until Friday....

Oh good luck
It's all legit for my wee chappie to go out for walks now.....been lead training in the garden and took him for his 1st walk yesterday started off with a little resistance until we got out of our close, then he was all guns blazing trotting down the road like an 'ol pro .
He tends to stop if cars go by but other than that i'm not having a prob in this dept.

Re: Countdown until Friday....

Good luck with the walk, I'd keep them on short leads I take the training lead with me and swop it over when time right. Might be helpful to get the puppies walking easier if you know someone with a dog who could walk in front to show em how its done. We did this with Arnie and he walked with no problem after a couple of times
