Some advice please

My 13 week old puppy Lucy is being really difficult to toilet train.

She came to us at 8 weeks with a bug in her tummy and had bad diarroreah constantly. She would poo anywhere and everywhere in the house. This i put down to lack of bowel control.

Now she is fine and she poops and wees in the house all the time and its driving me crazy.

I watch her all the time, but somehow she sneaks off and poos on our hall carpet. She will pee just about anywhere in the house.

I know that after a litle while after feeding her she will want to poop so i take her outside and she sniffs and runs around and does nothing. I cant be out with her all day long so i bring her back in and she goes to the mat and poops. Its soooooooooooo frustrating.

Anyne have any tips on what to do, i dont want a dog who only poos inside all the time, its horrible.

Thanks

Re: Some advice please

Do you use a crate?
This is what I did, as Lilly was a slow learner.
Take her out side every hour plus every time she woke up finished eating or stopped playing. Ignore her in the garden, just watch and wait as soon as she does something praise and run indoors plating. She'll soon learn that she has to stay out until she performs. i was outside for up to and hour at a tie to begin with - but they get the idea pretty quick.
If you are using a crate, take her out for 20 mins if she doesn't perform take her in and pop her in her crate for 2 minutes, then take her straight outside again. Repeat until she 'performs'. Again she'll soon learn that if she wants to play she'll have to go outside.
You will have to commit yourself for a couple of days of 24/7 toilet training - but it will be worth it.

Re: Some advice please

I have a 9 week old pup and have paper trained him (though put him outside regularly to get him used to doing it out there). I use newspaper and puppy pads as these have something impregnanted in them to encourage the pup to use them. He's doing really well and has only had 2 accidents since i got him home last weekend.

I praise every 'good' toilet and give a treat but ignore the ones done in the wrong place. Make sure you clean up the wee/poo thoroughly with something that has no ammonia (as this will encourage them to return) to prevent smell and re-occurance.

Re: Some advice please

I spent nearly 4 weeks outside up to an hour sometimes only to go back out again 30 mins later. It has paid off as Bailey very rarely has an accident, when he does it is my fault for not noticing he needs to go.

Re: Some advice please

When I had Sky I would take her out early in the morning and take her out whenever she started sniff, had eaten/drank or had been playing inside the house. Then I took her out one last time in the night.

I also got a spray from Pets at Home which is meant to stop them from going in the same place. It seems to be working

I don't use a crate myself, but I know that many owners here do x

Re: Some advice please

We use a crate for lucy. She never wees or poos in there. She holds it for ages if she has to go in their while im at work for 4 hours.

i seem to be always taking her out to the garden, and lately ive noticed she more happy to sniff and seek things out than wee !!or poo!!

i think i need to be more vigilant and regimental. She just playes around the house and goes into her crate for a nap or if we have to go out and leave her behind.

She has a wee or rather i take her out last thing at night. She doesnt always do a wee, and ive sat there for ages.

She just seems to want to do her business on our hall carpet. Ive tried that get off spray stuff and it doesnt work at all.

I cant trust her when sh ewanders off into another room as im pretty sure she will poo in it.

Re: Some advice please

Try putting a rag soaked in her wee in the garden and some of her poo (yuk but bear with me).

When it is wee/poo time take her out on a lead so she doesn't get distracted playing. Just stand still and wait until she goes. Up the treats to something really special and just use that when she goes in the garden (i know that may not be easy because of her tummy trouble but try and find something she really goes mad for)

Perseverence and patience will pay off in the end.

Re: Some advice please

Ok, first thing is don't fret. 13 weeks is still early for some puppies. I know some are toilet trained by then, but there are plenty that aren't so don't think you are an exception. In addition, you have the added difficulty that he has had an upset tummy which has made it even more difficult.

Keep on taking him out after every meal, when he wakes up, after play etc and he will get it eventually. It may be worth removing the hall mat for a while, and make sure that any messes are cleared up with biological liquid to remove any scent.

Hi Lucy, don't panic. Showing the treat first works for me. It took bailey 2 das to work out treat after wee.
