Re: puppy buying advice dilema

Thanks for all advice so far.

I think i may have been too naive in putting down a deposit on first visit. I don't have any info confirmed on the health of the parents, I have just seen the mother who appears healthy.

I am not entirely clear about the difference between pedigree and kc registered. Do dogs need to be kc registered before they can get a pedigree certificate in the first place?. How do i know if the pedigree papers is genuine? (according to the owner, the sire's owner is producing it).

I am strongly considering walking away now, minus my £50 deposit.

100% agree with dundee no way should you be paying her to keep the puppy after 6wks old. the price of the puppy is very very low . rottweilers sell from £600 to £750.

note: The sellers have never said they were kc registered which is reflected in the price but said they are pedigree which is what confused me.

Re: puppy buying advice dilema

Health tests are different from the health of a dog. Health tests are carried out on dogs and bitches that are bred from (whether pets or not) to check that they will not pass on certain health problems to their offspring. Some are based on DNA testing, some are by carrying out specialist tests - these are not something your own vet can do - they require specialist vets. The most common are eye tests (carried out by a vetinerary opthalmologist) and hip and elbow scores (where xrays are taken and sent to the BVA for evaluation and a score given). There are others, but I'm not sure what rotties require as they vary from breed to breed.

As far a pedigree goes, a pedigree is simply a list of ancestors - a family tree. Even a crossbreed will have a pedigree. A purebreed is where both parents are the same breed. There is no way this can be guaranteed - the nearest thing to a guarantee is KC registration. There are other registration companies, however these are merely certificate writing companies and mean nothing.

It's up to you of course, but if you are not worried about getting a health tested KC registered dog, what about getting a rescue dog? You will probably be none the wiser as to the parentage and health status of the dog as you are if you buy an unregistered dog, but you will have the satisfaction of giving an unwanted dog a home. Rescues can be hugely rewarding. There are breed rescues that deal only with rotties.

Re: puppy buying advice dilema

if the sire & dam have been hipscored you need to being seeing the score's in black and white this is undertaken by the b.v.a. the breed mean score is 14 in total. alot of breeders are now elbow scoring as well. this score sheet will have the dam's kennel club name on it and her k.c reg number.

am i allowed to add a link for a site that has quality rottweiler breeders?

I suspect they meant purebred as pedigree is sometimes used to refer to a purebred. Purebred merely means both parents are rotties, but there is no way of proving that (except through DNA testing and if the breeder hasn't done the health tests I doubt they will have DNA tested).

Just to add, re charging for keeping beyond 6 weeks. The breeder of my last puppy kept one of the litter for an extra two weeks (the rest went at 7/8 weeks) because the new owners were going on holiday. They asked for nothing.

Same for my breeder although they were mere private breeders not professionals. The pups were weaned around 6 weeks so they let them go around 7/8 weeks but because me and my OH had to go to London for 2 days for my graduation they agreed to keep ours for an extra 2 weeks or so..and since he was the last one to go we got the rest of the puppy food etc

£50 is not much money to lose so its up to you really.
I assume the breeders are private sellers therefore trading standards will not get involved.
You could always enquire about health tests (you never know) and the support they as breeders would offer you for the future..but at the end of the day if you are not 100% happy with them you should probably walk away.
