Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

With the huge number of dogs (this could apply to cats also) coming into rescue, the amount of money being spent looking after them must astronomical. Do you think it's reached a point where prevention is now cheaper?

I'm not just talking about free for oap's, free for the disabled or free for those on low income but free for everyone who has a dog. Maybe this will help change the culture of the "just one litter" and make it the norm that every adult dog is neutered.

Of Course this could go the other way. With more dogs neutered, those who still breed will know there are less litters and therefore try and charge more encouraging others to breed.

Just interested in your thoughts.

Re: Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

No! I do not think that the animal charities should have to pay for all neutering, it would be an aweful strain on their rescources. But I do think that there should be some law introduced whereby new owners have to legally have their dogs sprayed and castrated! Something like those applied to keeping a bull! but doubt we'll ever see it!!

I think it would hep. We are on a low income so will have to save for Zebs as we dont get any help. We have been quoted £145 ish depending on his final weight.

Or making it cheaper say £50 for a dog
£25 for a cat or something similar i think people would be more likely to do it then

Re: Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

I would resent be told to neuter my dogs.

I like the idea of free neutering and the Mayhew Animal home does offer this for SBT's,however I don't really see any impact it has had.
I don't think the Animal Charities should pay for it though,to me that is part of dog ownership and the costs involved in looking after it.

Even with free neutering available some will never take up the offer because breeding for money is much more appealing.

My bitch cost us nearly £500 when she was spayed, because of her having Pyo.

I agree it would be a drain on resources, especially now when there are lots of dogs in rescue. But just think if they started this 10/15 years ago. We could of had a complete culture shift in breeding. If for every dog neutered by a charity it stopped just one dog going into rescue further down the line it would be a massive saving.

Re: Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

No i think that there would be many charities and rescues that would have to close if this became the case. They just couldnt afford it.

Not every dog needs to be neutered, i'm still undecided about Billy, so I would be very angry to have someone make that choice for me. There is evidence i believe that some risks of certain cancers can be increased with neutering, so its not a decision i am making lightly. However I am responsible and would never have an unplanned litter. I also dont like it when dogs or bitches are neutered too early. There are risks with either option and its not a decision to be taken lightly.

With cats however, i do think that all male pet cats (not talking about show cats and studs here) should be neutered, as should all female pet cats. The disadvantages of owning an entire tom in the house (spraying - it stinks amongst others), and the health risks for an unmated queen far outweigh the risks of the procedure imho. Unwanted litters of kittens i would think are much more common than the litters of pups. Cats are very very clever at escaping.

I do wish that there was a set price countrywide for neutering and speying. Here for a cat spey can range from £55 - £185 depending on the vet, not sure on the neutering for males. I dont yet know the prices of dog neutering, i havent phoned around yet as i am still undecided.

millrescue neuter all their dogs that come in if they haven't been neutered unless they are puppies then people have to sign an agreement to say they will return thier pup when old enough to our vets to be neutered under our neutering scheme. if using their own vet then proof sent and this will be followed up on. all dogs also are fully vac'd chipped , wormed and frontlined. also all dogs go with a bag of arden grange which they are fed on.

Re: Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

Maybe the charities could work together instead of all doing their own thing. I think a mass neutering would be great and reduce the amount of unwanted puppies tenfold. If one dog is neutered it could save 6-8 puppies a time from an uncertain future.
If the government brought out a licence scheme where all the money went to the charities for medical treatment it would be sorted.

If i ruled the world. lol

Re: Should Animal Charities Pay For All Neutering?

I dont think these charitys pay full price for the neutering, been informed that my vets have a very good discount policy as most people tend to stay with the same vets after adoption so makes sense to be nice to the charity. Nice to know some vets have a heart
