Novice dog owner!!

Hi, Ive just become the proud owner of my very first dog!! A gorgeous 2 year old springer spaniel called Bradley. Everything going well-he is an angel, only thing im unsure of is what dog food is best?? Cat and Dog home told us to give him dried food once a day. Cannot get the brand the gave us so have tried different brands such as pedigree and tesco (which he didnt like!) He is now on Bakers complete which he prefers but keep being told it is rubbish?! Want to give him the best but really dont have a clue! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
Have you tryed searching the Internet for what food he was on at Rescue home?
Baker's is not recommended, as its full of Fat, and like feeding yourself/kids etc, a fried breakfast everyday....We have been down that route, not recommended at all, however some people/their dogs are happy on it! Its whatever you feel right feeding your boy...
We are currently giving our GSD Pedigree Puppy (and not happy with our decision, but there's bad in every dry food unless you feed Raw, and I have decided this is not our route, couldn't stomach it, lol) we were feeding him Beta dry food before, but he was gaining little weight, infact hardly any, and ribs were showing (been wormed etc) Its what works best for your dog at the end of the day....

Have heard Chappie is a good food, but am sure there'll be lots of advice for you on here....

Re: Novice dog owner!!

Yep bakers is rubbish-full of additives it'll probably send him hypo.

Try
James Wellbeloved
Burns
Wagg
CSJ

all good quality dry foods
If you email the companies they'll send you some samples and you can choose your/your dogs fav

If you want a good quality food you'll need to actually get it from a pet shop-many of the foods you can get in the supermarket aren't that great.
You want one that doesn't say "meat and animal derivatives"- this actually means dead animals (sometimes even other dead dogs and cats!!eek and none that our too additivey.
A good quality dry food can be generally identified as the pellets are all the same colour and size (not all different colours due to chemical colourings).

You could consider adding a good quality wet food into the dry food like Natures Menu or Nature Diet to wean him in to his new food too. Those are both great foods.
Best of luck and hope that helped

Re: Novice dog owner!!

To be honest I'd give him what he likes best, surely that's the best way to spoil him?
For a change every now and then for softer food you could give him those biscuits that you can either serve dry or add water to make a gravy come from them. Not sure of brand (could be bakers too) but it's a well known one (I'm a cat person you see but Mum has dogs and hers love the bakers meaty chunks on their own and they've served her well for last 4 years!).

Re: Novice dog owner!!

We have only had our puppy a week but we are giving him the pets at home premium puppy complete dry food. He likes it a lot though he doesnt finish his meals - but we are guessing what his portions should be.

P@H dog food is made by Royal Canin - I was told it was a different recipe but made by the same company so not too far off. Also my vet said Bakers should not be fed as too many additives not much substance.

The P@H range is all same size/colour/shape pellets.

By the way that rule of thumb should be applied to rabbits too A rabbit muesli is not a healthy diet and they are selective feeders so best to get a pellet that is all the same like Science Select. I wonder if that applies to cat food too???? Sorry off topic somewhat.

Re: Novice dog owner!!

I would recommend Origen as the best dry food, it is expensive though but is around 70% meat.
Otherwise I think James Wellbeloved and Burns are good foods.

I would avoid Bakers as its full of E numbers and chemicals that may make your dog hyper and it isn't a very good food.

I would say feed the best food you can afford and always read the ingredients.

Re: Novice dog owner!!

I feed my springers Burns, springers do tend to be very lively so a food with a lot of additives is not the best for them, Burns is a total natural food, a healthy food for mind and body, their coats are soft and glossy I can certainly recommend it
