Question Paper Train or not????

So do we put some newspaper down in the corner of the room for our almost 4 month old Tibetan or do we just forget that and march him straight outside if we spot him circling, sniffing, etc?

Part of me thinks keep the paper as it is teaching him to go on that and then put paper outside where you want him to go, so he gets the idea. Grab him as he looks like he's going to go, but at least it more or less saves your carpet.

The other part of me thinks this is balderdash as we're teaching him twice - once for newspaper and once for grass. If you're going to watch for him anyway, you might as well forget the paper, grab him and get on outside sharpish.

Please give us your opinions!!!confused:confused

Re: Paper Train or not????

You are right IMO. No point training twice.

To help when he wees soak it into the paper and put the paper in the garden, then when you take him out the smell will act as an indicator.

Ignore any mess in the house (if you catch him midstream just say Uh Uh to interrupt him and sau Outside while taking him out) just clear it up and loads of praise when he goes in the garden. They do get it pretty quick as long as you give them loads of opportunity to do it in the right place.

It is worth using a word when they wee like "hurry up" it really does teach them to wee on command (i didn't believe that at first but it does).

Good Luck

Re: Paper Train or not????

Papaer training (in my opinion) just teaches the dog it is acceptable to toilet in the house. From my own experience, it is alot harder to fully housetrain a dog who has been paper trained than one who has been taken outside.

Also from experience- the one time Most people forget their dog will need to pee is when they have been exited- ie, a family member coming home, a new person coming in, and when playing- So remember (as well as regularly and after sleep, eating and drinking) to take your pup out when a family member or someone new comes in, and every 20 mins or so during play.

Both my dogs will pee on comand, as when they were little, after they had been just getting praise for peeing outside, I started to add the command 'go pee' just before the praise.

The funniest thinng I ever saw was at the train station- a woman and her little dog on the gras, she was trying to get it to pee and was saying (in a sickly sweet voice) 'Fifi, please go wee wee for mummy'. The dog looked at her as if she was mad and just sat down! I walked over with my dog, said 'go pee' and she did, the woman nearly missed the train, and her dog peed on the floor after about half an hour! Lol

Good luck!

Re: Paper Train or not????

alright we will take the plunge and take the paper up. We've only had him since Saturday and as of Friday the person we got him from started paper training him so hopefully we wont have to undo too much.

He goes so quickly! Its a nightmare to catch it in time, and he seems to walk around sniffing constantly then you take him out and he does nothing so we are very confused! I must admit I wish I could pay someone to come over for a few days and train him to wee outside for me! How shameful! I love training him and working with him, and have taught him loads since we got him but the toilet training is doing my head in.

Re: Paper Train or not????

I used the puppy pads when we got Charlie, but like the others I think it just teaches them to go on the pad/paper and when they get the hang of it you change everything by trying to get them to go outside!!

If I was to go through the whole puppy thing again, I wouldn't use the puppy pads/paper, or maybe limit it to one in the crate during the night.

Re: Paper Train or not????

It does get better- I promise! :0

When Dixie was a pup, she was terrible!

I think I started off doing it wrong.

Anyway, I started to take her just outside the back door (there was the path then grass) every 20 mins. If she didn't pee I put her back in her crate for 10 mins, then back out again. if she did pee she got to stay out the crate then back out after 20 mins.

Its much easier having the pup on the lead, as they aren't able to mess about and play. And you don't have to follow them about the garden waiting for them to pee!

Imeediately after sleep is a great time because no doubt the pup will have to pee- so just stay out until he does then give Heaps of reward!
Ignore completely any mess in the house (unless, like rainy said- you catch him doing it, then 'ah-ah' and take him out), just clean it up.

He will soon cotton on that you Love when he pees outside and will want to do it more.

Keep an eye on hos body language, and if he sniffs about or circles, take him out. My pup actually whines when he needs out, and my dog barks and jumps up the door if she is desperate (I taught her that).

We got Dexter when it was snowing and standing outside with him wasn't as much fun as having a puppy. However, we only had to get him to pee outside a couple of times and praise him wildly for him to start getting the message. I watched him almost continually when we were up and crated him at night time. Despite his very strange and not terribly discrete manner of crouching we had success pretty quickly.

However, a few weeks later he seemed to be going backwards in the learning curve with far more accidents so we went back to basics and within 48 hours we were back on track.

This is the first dog (of many) I haven't used paper with and have used a crate. It has certainly been the easiest.

Good luck!

Re: Paper Train or not????

Interesting stuff on toilet training. Brining Bertie home on friday and am petrified. Good advice though will give the crate and outside thing a try. Has anyone heard of a pee post. Are they any good? I bought one (sucker I know) and showed it to my husband to which he said"Thanks but I 'll still use the toilet!"

Re: Paper Train or not????

We arent using a crate. I think that is rather taboo isnt it, we were strongly advised to and all the books advise it. We just didnt want to, for several reasons.

He was trying to sort himself out outside to do potty and he saw my husbands shadow in the house, the light was out and he went on major guard dog duty. I got him to stop barking with a sharp NO but then he was patrolling the garden, then racing back to me, sitting down right in front of me (facing the house where he saw the shadow) growling. After ages of this I gave up and took him inside, he promptly did a poo on my bedroom floor. I took him back outside to the area, sat myself down on the edge of my son's trampoline, and he jumped up on it behind me and sat with his back pressed against mine (facing the house again) and growled. Bless him he is totally obsessed with me and obviously very protective but clearly it isnt what I want at midnight when I just want him to wee so I can go to bed!

I do appreciate his devotion though, it amazes me that he knew straight away he was mine. I dont understand it.

Re: Paper Train or not????

Put him on a lead and stand somewhere on the grass so he can sniff around you but hasn't got enough lead to mess about.

Also, get your oh to feed him dinner and get him involved in training too.. that way maybe he will see you both as 'his'
