9 week old Jack Russell....

I was waiting for a bus today, and a women appeared with this gorgeous little JR puppy in her arms... which she then put onto the floor, the pup was shivering and looked terrified, then she picked her back up, got on my bus, and plonked the pup onto the seat next to her.

She basically gave everyone on the bus the pups life story... but at 9 weeks old, should it have even been out? It was sooooooo tiny! and at that age surely it wouldn't have had all it's injections?

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

Vaccinations shouldn't be given before 8 weeks so it's likely the puppy had only had 1 jab. There will be some, although not full immunity from about a week after the first jab. To be fair, I would take a puppy out at that age, as it does need socialising and getting used to things, however, I would be carrying it only, not allowing it on the ground. Did she put it down on the ground?

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

I would be taking the pup out socialising , but i wouldnt be putting it on the floor or on a bus seat for that matter.

I took bily out to socialise before all hi jabs were fully done, but he was either carried or he sat on the back seat (tandem seat) of my sons buggy. He wasnt ever allowed to go to the floor etc! He got to meet lots of people and I went to play with friends and family's dogs who i knew were fully vaccinated. HTH xx

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

maybe she thought if it had one jab it might have some immunity

maybe she isn't getting the jabs done

but she does sound like a proud parent so perhaps she doesn't realise the risks.

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

Eight weeks and twelve weeks for the jabs me finks, so I doubt it would have had those! Some people just have different ways of doing things!!!
There is a guy local to us whose JRT had pups a few months back - he had been carrying a couple of those around town since they were about 4 weeks???? they have made good strong dogs FORTUNATELY!!! hope this one does the same!! some people are just so irresponsible!!!

a two week gap between vaccinations, not a 4 week one DT
early socialisation is a good idea so carrying pups around is surely not irresponsible even though I wouldnt imagine it is very common.

Re: 9 week old Jack Russell....

Mine had jabs at 8 and 10 weeks so I would be surprised if it should have been put on the floor. She probably just wanted to show it of, another case of person before dog

Matter of opinion Blitz - as it happens our dogs have always been socialized early - not the current dogs but most of our past dogs we had a six weeks of age! As the OP said - the dog was shaking and timid - draw you're own opinion by all means!!! but don't knock mine!

And whilst on the point of vacs I am well aware our vets do prefer a two week gap! And although I am not saying who is correct on this one I prefer to differ!

The interval between the first series of booster vaccinations should be between 3 and 4 weeks because vaccines can interfere with each other; upon infection with the vaccine virus, cells increase interferon production. Therefore, if the second vaccine is given within a week to ten days, it will fail. Delays longer than 8 weeks should be avoided.
