Question To neuter or not ??????????

Well my border collie is now 20 weeks old and we were going to get him neutered but now i'm not sure what to do for the best

The vets say 6 mths and i have read about 4-6 mths being the best time...
I have also been told that early neutering can make not a blind bit of difference, and can result in having a mature dog behave like a puppy all the time! also read that it can change the puppys personality for the worse this i do not want to happen

Main reason we though we would need to have him neutered is cos we have a older unneutered collie aged 14 atm they get along great

Any help on this would be greatly appriciated

Re: To neuter or not ??????????

Hi there,
Do you have any plans to breed from your bitch,if not I personally would consider having her spayed and leaving your dog entire.

It has health benefits for both male and female but I always think it's more beneifical to the bitch,it cuts out the risk of mamory cancer and pyometra which if not caught immediatly can be fatal.

Alot of vets won't neuter until after 6 months of age,but apparently vets in the US will neuter as early as 12 weeks I think.

Re: To neuter or not ??????????

vets will differ in opinion as with spaying a bitch but ive read benefits of not having males done till at least 9 months aparently this enables them to mature properly and grow in the correct way making sure they have all there adult traits . A friend of ours has just had his 11 month old lab done and waited till now because he still was,nt cocking his leg to pee and he didnt want it to affect his growth he is now fine after a week of taking it easy .
