Re: Doggie Blood Donors

Great post Alan.

Zak hated the vets so we only took him when absolutely necessary However, I am hoping that Luika will be a little more accepting of his visits to the vets, so would be happy for him to give blood.

you can call your vets and explain to them that you would like your dog to become a blood donor, they will have to run through the neccessary questions and will also need to give your dog a full health check to make sure she doesnt have any under lying health problems!

you can also follow the link to register your dog as a blood donor: see the first page for the link

At the moment they are still searching for volunteers so just give them a ring and volunteer her, they aren't at the stage of doing health checks etc yet just getting a list of volunteers to see if it is viable.

that is true, but you can still register with your vet if you want your dog's to donate blood.

when a dog needs a transfusion, the vet will contact someone suitable to give blood for the dog that they need it for!!!

the only reason i know about it, is because when i did my work placement with my local vets 5 years ago there was a grey hound who came in and gave blood for another very sick grey hound!

Wondered if anyone else had done this or heard of it? How did your dog react? Do you do it regularly?

First I heard was today when we had the cats up there yet again!
I had never even heard of that before!

Are dogs like humans with the blood groups like AB+ ect??
