Brushing a dogs teeth - Advice/comments please

Hi out there.

According to the Pedigree site, 6 months is about the age that you should start getting your dog used to having dental care. Do any of you actually brush your dogs teeth? Any advice on what works best (products / techniques etc) or tips on how to get your dog to actually let you?

I find that the dry food alone does most of the work keeping teeth clean. But I also give my 2 rawhide chews every other day & some greenies chewie toothbrushes which contain natural ingredients. Seem to work well.

LOL yes we do but not too often as tey tend to have lots of raw veg to keep there teath clean . if your going to pets at home there is an array of dog dental products dont spend a fortune a simple tooth brush ( some are double headed to get either side of the teath ) and a tube of paste ( doggy paste ) i found getting Daisy lay on her back between my legs when she was calm already was the best time allow him to smell it and feel it in the mouth and gently work it round the teath but not for too long he wont need it really yet but its good to do it a couple of times a week to get them used toit for when he is older and needs the brushing more .

Same goes for my Akita have never brushed her teeth or had them cleaned at vet. And Rawhide chews I find are quite a cheap way of helping them stay clean.

I do brush my dogs teeth with a doggy toothbrush and doggy toothpaste......the taste is enough for them to let me do it....its chicken flavour. Also I give them a product called Plaque Off in their food which helps to keep plaque at bay....

Plenty of bones does the trick at this house - both mine have beautiful, strong, healthy white teeth and lovely pink gums

We've never had a problem with Milo as hes always been fed mostly dried food but since about 10 months old hes had a dentastix a day. He also seems to chew alot of sticks when were out walking, I would presume thats got to help too.

Thanks for all your comments, that probably explains why my last '57' always had nice teeth. I only ever fed her dried stuff and gave her chew sticks. Never bothered with the bones though because she was small and had a great deal of problems getting them out again the other side. I always presumed it was just because she was a 57 and hardy. 5 days to go now, can't wait to get him
