Breeder's who have pups returned ?

Is it wrong of Breeders who have dogs / pups returned to them for whatever reason to then rehome them ?

Thoughts and no mud slinging please

No IMO nothing wrong with it at all, as long as they properly vet the next home and wait for the right one to come along.

I wish more breeders took on pups that they bred when the owners no longer want them, it would certainly see a lot less dogs in shelters!

IMO breeders should be responsible for the dogs they breed.

No, why should it be? Realistically we all have a limit on the number of dogs we can keep, including breeders, so it would not be realistic to always expect a breeder to keep a dog returned to them. It is the breeders responsiblity to find the best home possible both as a puppy and if any should be returned, but that home may not be back with the breeder.

I think it has to be in the interests of the dogs that they are found new forever homes as soon as possible and good breeders will vet the new owners before placing the dog, and follow it up as it settles in.

I think the breeder is responsible and needs to take the dog back until they can find a suitable home. With as much care, if not more, as when they find homes for their new puppies.
We need to be realistic no-one has a never ending supply of space, money and time it would be unfair to the dogs to take in more than a person could cope with.

Re: Breeder's who have pups returned ?

Another pup from Oscar's litter went to his new home but was returned because their other dog kept attacking the pup. The older dog had met the puppy at the breeder's house but when they got home, it went pear shaped. The puppy did find another home and is very happy there or so I'm told.

Re: Breeder's who have pups returned ?

no way i would always want to know where my pups go so would always have them back at any time, if they stay with me or i find them a new home.

lucky ive ever only had 1 pup back due to a change in the family situation, which i found him a new home with a lovely gentleman with a older dally. that were not to far from me

Re: Breeder's who have pups returned ?

I have told everyone who bought a pup from me to return it if they cannot look after it. - All of them have settled in well, have been really easy to toilet train and all attending puppy classes after easter, its great

But yeah, if someone returned a pup I would want to keep it. Realistically though I would probably rehome.. Our house is rented and garden isn't big eniugh for as many dogs as I would have!

Re: Breeder's who have pups returned ?

It would depend on why the pup was returned. If it was just that the new owner couldn't cope with it or their circumstances changed that meant the pup was not going to be looked after properly then they should rehome again to the right person. If it was because there was a medical problem with the pup then no they should never have sold it in the first place and they should be responsible for its future.
The number of times I have heard people say they have a problem with a pup and the breeder has not wanted to know.
