Shar Pei puppy

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a shar pei puppy in a couple of months time. I don't have any pets at the moment but my parents have 2 Bichon Frise bitches.

As you can imagine they are soft as hell and would probably be very nervous with me introducing another dog to them.

I visit my parents pretty often so would like them to get used to the Shar Pei so should I introduce them as soon as I get the pup and very often while the Shar Pei is a pup so they get used to eachother as I would imagine it would be a risk to the Bichons once the Shar Pei gets older and bigger!

They also come up my house from time to time so I really want to be sure that when they do visit they won't be in any danger from the Shar Pei.

Thanks in advance

Re: Shar Pei puppy

Congratulations in advance for your new arrival. Is it true that all Sharpeis have to have an operation to get the folds out of the way of the eyes?

I think you should visit your parents virtually daily for a while with the puppy and when it can go out for walks take all three with you.

If you can have the puppy stay over with your parents and then you have their 2 dogs overnight so that they are exposed to each other as often as they can then that will help. Also who wants to put their mutts in kennels when they can go on holiday with relatives instead! Get the new puppy to mix with everyone you know who has dogs. I am speaking from experience as l have a few problems with my mutts and in hindsight - l think l would have done things very differently.

PS Karen has posted fantastic advice on how to be pack leader. If l had read her post before l got my pups l would'nt have the problems l have now.

Go to the dog training and behaviour and look at I need help. Believe me you will get off to a flying start if you are prepared in advance.

Please send in a photo when he or she arrives? ttfn xxx Kittysoo

I've heard this is sometimes needed but I need to do more researching I think.

Thanks for the advice, are there any Shar Pei owners on this forum?
