reddogs will become famous soon enough
Too Young

Probably a controversial subject and I don't want people to get het up and start a slanging match but here's my thing and I would be grateful for your take on this

I have been reading posts about people getting puppies and how excited they are etc etc etc

wonderful and I love the fact that everyone is so excited but what I really really don't understand is

why oh why oh why

are a lot of these puppies only 6 weeks old ??

and then why are they being taken almost straight away to the vet for their jabs?

I was always under the impression that the puppy should be around 8 weeks old before it should leave the breeder

and also that you should let the poor thing settle in for a before starting on its jabs

I would be interested in opinions as I am confused about this as I really feel that these babies are very young, although I accept that there are occasions when there is no choice

Re: Too Young

I wonderd that myself, I let my litter go at 8 1/2 weeks old and any that had jabs were 10 weeks+

I met up with someone who got their pup at 5 weeks because the mother rejected it so teh breeder said they could have it early.

I totaly agree but last time i comented on a 6week old pup going for jabs i was told i didnt no anything and it was perfectly noramal for a 6week old pup to leave there mother and have jabs..
we breed and dont agree with both of theses..!
but hey each to our own cant all have the same opions..!!

Re: Too Young

I have allowed pups to go at 7 weeks, because they had been eating solids since they were 3 weeks old, were huge and mum had refused to let them feed for a couple of weeks,so really there was nothing i could do,that new parents couldnt do also!! i usually say to let pups settle for at least a couple of weeks before going to vets

Re: Too Young

I don't agree with puppies leaving before 8 weeks old, but as for getting jabs done straight away, I have done this with both mine because imo getting them out socialising and training classes as early as possible is most important. Whilst I understand people what you are saying, neither of mine had any ill effects whatsoever

Re: Too Young

Think is the USA REd it is common for pups to leave the litter a 6 weeks, we have had them in the past at that age, BUT, do agree with you 100% - as for the innoculations I am always very careful about these (due to losing my girl to AI) between 8-10 weeks, but if it were my own pup and I was keeping it I would be looking at as late as 12 weeks

good question..... I AGREE!
my pups never leave til they are at least 8 weeks as i feel 6 weeks is way to young!
jabs done at 8-10 weeks
breeders that sell at 6 weeks are probably breeding to line there pockets and need to get rid quickly
also ive seen no mention of kc reg or any health screening
but im going shut up as i dont feel like a argument tonight lol

Don't think they'll be one Cav, seems we are all in agreement. To add to what I'd said above a healthy pup should have built up a certain amount of immunity from it's mum - to innoc too early can send this haywire imho - but doubt a vet would ever agree to this!!! But there are getting to be more and more that are finally agreeing that annual boosters are not necessary. Not meaning to crash the thread like - sorry
regards
DT

Re: Too Young

My pups never leave until they are 8 weeks.

The only time I was prepared to make an allowance and let a puppy go at 7.5 weeks the new owners sais no. They had travelled well over 200 miles to see the pups and although I sai she could go they said they would rather leave her until she was 8 weeks and came back at the weekend. They travelled halfway stayed at friends overnight then came to us then did the same in reverse on the way home.

Re: Too Young

They also learn alot of social stuff eg toilet training, how to play etc between 6 & 8 weeks which could be why some puppies are more difficult than others in the early weeks.

I read somewhere when i was getting Oscar that there is some sort of regulation against selling a pup earlier than 8 weeks but it is not enforced.

Think it was in my puppy book i think. Will have a look later if i get time.

I am not sure that people would actually make a statement about them being KC reg etc on here, i don't think you can assume they aren't just because people don't mention it.
