Re: Too Young

I agree, I wouldn't take a puppy before 8 weeks, or maybe 7.5 weeks..
My lot went at just over 7 weeks, but that was advice from a vet who saw them all at home and knew that they had been without mum since 2.5 weeks, and saw how great they were getting along.

I have had a dog at 6 weeks before (my now ex bought her for me) and she was a nightmare. She never fully understood how to play properly with other dogs, she always tried to mouth them and bite there ears. She bonded to me very quickly and when I had no choice but to leave her with my dad, she ruined his room! Never again will I get a dog so young and I dont know why others would let a pup go so young or take one.

Re: Too Young

I don't rehome pup's before 10 weeks old, usually 12 weeks as i want to be sure that they are able to cope by theirselfs, i think 6 weeks is too young for both mum and pup's to be seperated, i think 8 weeks min, i usually go for the 10 to 12 weeks

Re: Too Young

In Sweden the rules are as following (which I will follow with my puppies also). First innoculation should be at the breeder (6-8 weeks), second at the new owner at 12 weeks.

No puppy shall leave the mother before they are at least 8 weeks, they might be weaned but they must learn to socialize with other dogs.

The mother teaches them "doggysense" and that makes it much easier for humans to take over their obediencetraining. A dog that's taken from their mother too early is often much harder to teach since he haven't got the "growl of doom" from his mother (or other dogs at the breeder) when he did something not allowed, he is also often harder to have around other dogs since he didn't get "doggyrules" when he was little (and this is not only males but bitches too, even if I use the pronoun "he").

I have been reading posts about people getting puppies and how excited they are etc etc etc

wonderful and I love the fact that everyone is so excited but what I really really don't understand is

why oh why oh why

are a lot of these puppies only 6 weeks old ??

and then why are they being taken almost straight away to the vet for their jabs?

I was always under the impression that the puppy should be around 8 weeks old before it should leave the breeder

and also that you should let the poor thing settle in for a before starting on its jabs

I would be interested in opinions as I am confused about this as I really feel that these babies are very young, although I accept that there are occasions when there is no choice
We have aways had our puppies at 8wks had the first jab at 10weeks and 2nd jab at 12weeks.

Re: Too Young

I got Cody at 7 weeks old. All my others (family) we have got at 8+ but the breeder said she wouldn't hang on to him and I had fallen in love.
They were already seperate from their mum and on solids... and were being kept in an outhouse...thought it would be better to get him used to the 'indoors' as soon as possible, I know some people would disagree....

I got his jabs at 8 weeks because this is when the vet told me to do them, tbh I had no idea which is why I asked for their advise?!

This was just my experience...
