Vaccinations

I've never heard this said before and find it very hard to believe but i was just talking to a friend who has 2 dogs. She said that as long as vaccinations are given as a pup, they don't require the yearly booster!!! Surely this is incorrect and total madness .

I know i'm going to keep up with the vacs, always did as it seems the right and proper thing to do.

Anyone else ever been told this?

Re: Vaccinations

We only ever used to be recommended vacs while they were pups many years ago, but since the outbreak of parvo which needs to be covered regularly, the vets are now pushing for annual vacs. Some of which are not entirely necessary or even desirable

Re: Vaccinations

I have heard this as well, mine will always have their yearly vaccinations, however my sister has to lab crosses 10 and 12 yrs old and they havnt had any boosters since they where pups and both have been very healthy,so depends ,i personally would rather my dogs had the protection because you never know, best to be safe than sorry.

Gosh, that was a long time ago. I started working with a vet in the early 70s (just before parvo) and dogs were vaccinated as pups, again at 2 and at 6 for distemper and hepatitis and annually for lepto. There was a distemper outbreak and a lot of vaccinated dogs died. For the last 30 years it has been annual boosters for everything and kennels wont accept dogs without it. Some vets are now recommending lepto every year and the others ever two or three years as some drug companies have reassessed . Lepto definitely only lasts a year and country dogs are at very hight risk.

presumably they have never come in contact with any of the diseases otherwise they would be very dead rather than very healthy. Because 90 percent of dogs have annual boosters there is very little distemper or parvo around and therefore the odd dog that isnt vaccinated is highly unlikely to get infected. But if everyone stops vaccinating we will be back to the 'good old days' with very high mortality rates among young dogs.

Re: Vaccinations

Mmmmm,
Difficult subject,I don't give mine any booster's infact they have not had any vacs since there initial pup vacs,we used to titre test, however we have now found this is unreliable.
We are over vaccinating our dogs,so for for me it's catch 22 at the moment.

Re: Vaccinations

In 1962 we had 2 puppies and at that time people did not have their dogs injected like they do now, we never had either of ours injected during the 12 years we had them and they were never ill. I remember at that time you still had to have a licence. I used to pay for them out of my pocket money.
When we lived in Hampshire we had a Yorkie and our vet said you did not have to have the booster done exactly every 12 months as they would be covered for up to 15 months without a problem and thats what we did with Pepper and she lived to 16 years.
We now have Holly and she is just due her first yearly booster, as there is more Parvo about now and especially, I am told in this area I will be getting it done soon.
