Dodgy Docking

The dewclaw thing reminded me something.

Barney's tail is a long dock for a working type dog but what I find is odd is below where his tail is docked is a long scar almost as though someone missed where they wanted to go. His dewclaw scars are odd too almost like someone pulled them out, the scar is not straight and sorta curvy and in the middle bit a little deep.

It does make me wonder if what was done to him was done legally, he's 3/1 years old so it was within the law to have a vet dock tails. I never met his breeders so I never knew them or the story of his docked tail and dewclaws but meeting his sister her tail is a dodgy sorta dock.

anybody else have the same/hear of this?

Re: Dodgy Docking

There are many tails that I would say were docked 'dodgy'!!!! but I have seen a couple of dogs that I would have sworn were docked 'dodgy' only to be assured they were done by a vet. Vets use different methods so I believe - and the tails I refer to had be cauterized , they filled up with puss everyday!

Ah true, though what gets me is the scar about half a inch below where his tail is docked? could have been a dodgy dock it then it could have just been a vet's first dock? it's a pity I will never know

aws poor las, barney has no problem's me touching his tail or the scar, it's a shame really docking a tail when they are just going to be for a pet or show dog (although docking for health reasons is understandable also).

Re: Dodgy Docking

When docking was legal, some vets where unsure of the length of tail to leave on certain breeds hence a few breeders I know of docked themselves They would either use elastic bands or clip off with miller forge type clipper (used for clipping pet nails and beaks) which crush rather than slice so as to seal the stump and minimise bleeding.
Sorry but I am soo glad that docking is now done a lot less!

UGH, that's sick! I remember watching animal cops and seeing a boxer with an elastic band on it's tail digging in, poor thing

The elastic band method is still used widely during the lambing season?!
