Advice please

Hi everyone, only found this site this afternoon and would appreciate some advice. Both my husband and I grew up with dogs as pets but as we both work full time havn't had one since we've been together. We now have a 7 year old little boy who would love a dog (as would we) .
Our idea is to have 2 small dogs which would be company for each other while we're at work and fit a dog flap to the back door so they have access to the house and our smallish enclosed garden.
What are your thoughts on this and what breeds would you recommend.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Advice please

Seeing as you have a child I wouldn't recommend a yorkshire terrier or a chihuhua as they can be nippy and can hurt.

The small dogs I recommend or a Shih-Tzu, pug, beagle, border terrier. And if you decide for a bigger dog then a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Labrador

Hope that helps, I'd recommend you do some research first before buying a dog.

Re: Advice please

the coice is endless but with you both being out at work all day its going to be a hard task to toilet train them and soscialise them .leaving 2 young pups to thier own devices all day could be a disaster waiting to happen although saying that lots of people manage to somehow get it right . maybe think of re homing 2 older dogs together so you dont have to do so much work . I would carefully think about this as your time with them is restricted . You need to devote time and attention to dogs whatever age they are an hour or so walking each day is just the start . good luck

Re: Advice please

Tracey I would strongly advise against getting dogs if you cannot accommodate their needs.

I run a pet sitting business which offers a dog walking service for people who are working each day. It really is not an ideal situation, unless you work part time, or shift work and I have seen untold beavioural problems associated with separation anxiety, when dogs are left for long periods of time.

Have you considered re homing a couple of cats? Far lower maintenance and can be left while out working.
