Oh Dear, There`s a cat - Here we go again !

Hello folks, it`s KAS again, asking your valued opinion on restraining BIG dogs when on the lead.

As most of you probably know from my infamous reputation, I own a T-Rex look-a-like called KAS - no it is`nt him that writes all this infuriating nonsense on this site - it`s ME.

He is a very big Alsatian - GS to some of you - long haired, traditional mountain breed with straight back - not ya Cruft`s rubbish with butt trailing on the floor. He weighs 52 kg and is very strong.

He`s had me over a few times and I had bumps to show for it, but I am always on my guard now. Doing an impression of Spartacus without his chariot is not my idea of a game of soldiers.

QUESTION :-

I use a restrainer. I think it is called a Halti. It goes round the nose, back to the neck and then forms a secondary "collar" - I attach this to his normal collar for good measure. This makes it easier to control him when he decides to take off like a rocket after some prey, usually cats. Even so, if I am not on my guard to hold him, the subsequesnt experience makes my eyes water.

It works fine, but have any of you got suggestions on what type of nose/neck restrainer is best ? Description, make and cost etc.
I would really welcome all your coments on this.
We are thinking of getting a new one and your suggestions will help a great deal.
Many thanks to you all
KAS

Turkeylad my dear chum,
KAS is not a raving lunatic when out walkies. HE also has been trained well and knows all about LEAVE IT etc. It works most of the time, but when he decides the pot is too tasty to leave, then all is forgotten. I would`nt have him any other way.

All I am asking for in this thread is advise on Halti -type restrainers, not advise on dog training.

My brother swearsby the Canny collars - for his stupid dingo (well thats what he calls him - he's actually a labrador). My bro breeds and show's however he had almost given up training dingo as nothing was stopping him pulling likea train! Until he got the Canny! He cant reccomend it enough. The rescue centre i volunteer for also used them for all it dogs on walks, as many have not been lead trained and it really really works!

Sounds promising. Can you describe to me what it looks like, what material and how it fits and adjusts ?
Are Canny restrainers expensive compared to a Halti ?

Re: Oh Dear, There`s a cat - Here we go again !

O - here is my attempt at describing it - lol be prepared i'm not much good at it lol lol

Its min part is a normal webbing collar (normal nylong collar), this is fitted higher on the neck (behind the ears), than your would normally for a flat collar. Over the normal collar is a longer thinner strip of webbing which clips behing the head and is where you attatch your lead to. At the front of the collar under thedogs chin, you pull the smaller strip up and over the dogs nose and adjust to fit with a toggle. Now when your dog pulls, hs head is lowered and he has to look down, which stops him in his tracks. It also breaks his line of sight with whatever he has seen that is interesting - giving you yet another bit of time for getting his attention on you rather than the bunny/cat/dog/carrier bag lol.

ore pics to come and videos. I think they cost around £12-15ish, so not terribly cheap but worth every penny!!!!

Re: Oh Dear, There`s a cat - Here we go again !

Hello playmates.

As a result of the replies to this thread, not many, but the information given by BillyBoysmammy of the CANNY collar, with the photos and description, has made our minds up.

We have fixed on the Canny collar. Nobody round here actually stock them, but there is no problem ordering one.

I sussed out PENDULUM on the net who seem to market them, read all their data - quite comprehensive and Emailed them regarding size, which can be debatable.

They said that the collar has to be a tight fit just behind the ears and said that a large GS should not need more than their Size 5 or 43-45 cm.

WELL, Mr.Pendulum you sure ain`t seen my KAS. If we put a Size 5 on him, it would simply be a question of cremation or burying, the dog would choke to death.

My wife measured him at 56 cm and then I measured him at no less than 54 cm. THAT means a SIZE 7 ! or 53-58 cm. There is not much adjustment, about 2 inches I believe - hopefully downwards.

So, we have ordered a Size 7 from our pet man and will get it soon. Cost about £15.

The Canny certainly looks good, it satisfies my own technical criteria and knowledge of Mechanics, Neton`s Laws and all that jazz.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO BILLBOYSMAMMY and all of you who replied.
KAS

PS - I would like to gratefully thank the Royal Navy Portsmouth Division for kindly supplying the chain and anchor. Our Armed Forces are so obliging. However, I must apologise to Commander Dogsbody for having to return it broken - KAS saw a cat.
