Lab puppy at play

Hi i wondering if someone could help me, i have just had a neighbour with a 2 yr old staff say that if she took him to the vet the vet would think he had been dog fighting but all hes been doing is playing with my 6 month old lab.

Yes my Barney is very playful with the other dog and seems to go to the same spot on the neck of the staff each time and i have been told off and told to train my dog better, i said it may be best if i removed my dog and they would no longer play together to save any injuries to her dog.

Do labs play that roughly, both dogs seemed quite happy and im sure if my dog had hurt hers my dog would know about it.

Re: Lab puppy at play

Did the neighbour agree to the two dogs playing together? Have you actually seen the staffy and is your neighbour over-reacting in your opinion?

I'm certainly no expert but I'd be surprised at a lab playing overly roughly, and usually the older dog would check the younger before harm was done.

Hopefully somebody will be able to better advise!

Thank you for your reply, yes she did agree, shes even knocked at my door asking if Barney could come out and play and now shes saying im in the wrong for not stopping my dog from hurting hers.
The dogs have not growled, beared teeth anything, just run around both pulling at each other.

Re: Lab puppy at play

Not sure if this helps.
Some dogs are to tolerant of puppies and don't tell them off when perhaps they should.
When we got our second pup Lilly our first dog Zipper would not tell her off for playing to rough. She managed to give him puncture wounds to his ear and he never ever whimpered, he would let her bite and pull his ears. So it was up to us tell her this rough play was to much and remove her from the game.

Are there any puppy classes near you that hold socialisation sessions - often called puppy playgroup or puppy romp, where puppies play supervised by their owners and some dog trainers?

Re: Lab puppy at play

Thank you for your post, most puppy training classes are held in the evening, i may have to go out of my area to find a daytime one. I have a disabled child and a toddler so they cant come to a class with me but for now i have removed my dog from playing with this dog to which the owner wasnt pleased and i wont repeat what she called me lol.

Re: Lab puppy at play

Prob for the best the pup doesn't play with the staffy next door. Especially if the nieghbour is upset
Is there any other dogs you know that you could strictly supervise play with so your lab learns what is appropriate play?

Doesn't sound like you can win! They play together - she tells you off, you stop them playing together, she tells you off!
