dog season panic

hi,my jack russell bitch has entered her first season .she has been losing blood for four days now.however the postman left our gate open and she escaped.she was only missing for a couple of minutes and was found over at the park by another dog owner.i was wondering if there is any possibility that she may have mated in her abscence or if it is too soon.do not want puppies and was planning her spay after this season so am hoping someone has an idea of the likelihood of pregnancy, thankyou

Re: dog season panic

Hi, if its only her fourth day of her season then its too soon for her to mate.
A bitch will usually mate and be able to fall pregnant from around the 10th - 20th day. Nevertheless, its always best to keep her in throughout her season as there is always exeptions to the rule!

Re: dog season panic

Our Jessie was in season just after christmas asked the vet about this as i had never owned a bitch before , she said she is more likely to get pregnant after she finishes bleeding , apparently they are at there most fertile for the 7 - 10 days finishing her bleed after this time she will still smell good to male dogs so could be a distraction when out for another 7 days , but would not concieve at this point . Jessie bled for nearly 16 days it was a long one then we kept her to lead walks only for the next week or so .

The problem with that is some bitches are fertile whilst still bleeding! The colour may only change slightly in some bitches so it may be very hard for some owners to tell.
I always say vets are good at treating sick animals and breeders are good at breeding dogs. Well, most of them

Re: dog season panic

yes thats true Bullbreeds. If she was only missing for a couple of minutes then she couldnt of mated anyway as they dogs lock during mating and can last upto 40 mins.

Re: dog season panic

A bitch can still get pregnant without a full tie.But yes it was too early to get mated.

Re: dog season panic

my bitch has just come in seasons and she has been standing for themale since day 3 of it so it is always best to go to the vet, if its her very first season it is unlikely that she would have stood that easily but always best to be safe and seek a vets advice.

Re: dog season panic

Yep I hate to say it but a friend has just had a litter of puppies and her bitch was on day 5 she had a litter of 6, and I have just been using my dog on a bitch who we have had probs getting in whelp she stood for him on day 7, he has also sired a litter of 13 without a tie so even slip matings produce a good litter
