Kennels

I have a twelve month old Min.Schnauzer and next year we would like to go abroad for a week putting him in kennels.
I have had Schnauzers since the 1970s and always had the mother-in-law to come and live at our house whilst we went away, sadly she passed away two years ago and now we have no one to leave him with that we coud really trust.
How do dogs take to kennels? do they fret or stop eating or anything like that ? we have had a look at a kennel that was recommended and it seems very exclusive, the dogs are walked twice a day in their fields are kept on the same food and tit bits as they have at home.
My only worry is that he should get upset if we leave him there, has anyone ellse put there dogs in kennels, and how did they get on. this one charges £16 per night.

Re: Kennels

Mine has been going to kennels when we go away from an early age of 6 months as i wanted him to get use to it at a early age. He doesnt really show any worries about going other than passing the police dogs at the exit as they go nuts. Apart from that they have said hes well behaved comes for a cuddle and a brush and eats everything they offer. Most kennels offer a food thats easy digestible for most dogs even with a sensitive tum. If you dont want to swap his food you can take his to the kennel but they dont lower the price. The quote for the price is around the average. My dog always comes home happy and well brushed. I havent in the 8 years had one problem and he goes twice a year.

Re: Kennels

I'm in the same dilemma as you as my boy is 2 years old and has never been in a kennels before so I am going to try him for a weekend and see how he goes. As I am also worried about the not eating etc. I thought a weekend wouldn't be to bad.

Im sure you could take him for a visit, to familiarize him with the place, people etc.

I am going to try Benji in October for 3 nights, its a very high class kennel where they have there own little rooms, two good walks a day, same food he is on at home,I would think he would be ok because he loves meeting people
and gets on with everyone.

Re: Kennels

I am leaving Henrick with a home boarder when we go away in a few weeks, they look after him in their own home , he even gets to sleep in their bedroom, eats his own food and goes for two walks a day. They are charging £16 per full day and night and that seems about average for around here (West Yorks). He is a particullarly nervous dog and I don't think he would deal with kennels very well.
