Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

My other half has said we have to find out approximately how much it will cost to have a dog or puppy before we decide.
How much does it cost you?

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

Have you decided on what size dog you would like? Then you will need to account for any vet bills that may arise..Its a very difficult question to give a straightforawrd answer to..

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

Quite a lot. just a few quick points are: insurance, vet fees, medications like antibiotics (occasional), worming tabs, flea control (regular), bedding, crates, toys, leads/collars, food/kibble, aswell was stimulation, exercise, training, training classes/socialisation
I was payinf £650 a year for insurance until i reviewed and got it for £350 - vet fees £30 a visit, treatments £60-80 a visit
In all anual costs are probably around £800+
I have a springer btw

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

It will also depend on what type of food you will be feeding your dog/puppy.

I feed Arden Grange which is £35.00 for a 15kg bag which lasts about a month and a half but there are cheaper dog foods.

I worm every 3 months which is 2 tablets in total for my two little dog, thats about £5.00.

I also have them both insured which is £32.00 per month.

I give my yearly booster injections too which is about £20 each.

Then there are possible vet bills for unforseen things like upset tummys, cuts etc which is not enough to be covered by insurance.

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

It can cost as little or as much as you like really. I have rescues, all cost me pretty little actually. Mine arn't insured as no one will insure 3 of them so don't see the point for the others. (I'll always find the money if I need to) but if they were it would be around £10 each a month as they are all mongrels. They eat raw so on average it costs me £10 a month to feed each dog. I don't vaccinate but if I did that would be £30 per year. If you get a rescue you're looking at the most £120 donation for a pedigree, less if it's an older dog or non-pedigree. I didn't have to give anything for 4 of my dogs because 2 were on the PTS list due aggression (I took them on to try and rehabilitate...and kept them ) and the other 2 are failed fosters!! Sidney was £50 donation because he was a puppy so I paid for him being spayed £130 ish. (well I would of paid but managed to get a voucher from my mate so didn't cost me anything in the end!!)

If you need kennels then that's a big expense, or a dog walker. I'm lucky I need neither of these.

My main expense would be collars (cos I like them to have nice new one's) and toys for Sidney..I must spend at least £10 a month on balls for him!!!

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

I have a 5month old bulldog. i spend about £13 on her food for a month she has beta which is £6.45 a bag but it 3for2 at pets at home at the minute. i pay £5 for worming once a month. i pay £21 for 3 flea treatments which i do every 2 months. we got a bed from RSCPA which was £12 which she still fits in for now. bought her two collars to far and a lead about £36 all together but they have been nice ones, i got a blanket off ebay for her which was £1.50 and most her toys were bought for her but we spent about £10 on some toys which are still lasting her. i think thats all, oh nail cutting no somewere that does it for £5 but we goin to buy our own cause it saves money.
