Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

I have two so I do have a few more expenses, but here we go...:

food, £40 per 40kilo bag

insurance:£12 a month per dog

Vet costs,... injections, worming & frontline:about £100 a year

Car valet (hair gets EVERYWHERE) £40 a time

Bedding:un limited-depending on whether you dog is a chewer! I have paid anywhere from£10-£50 for a single bed

Products: shampoo/velvet coat/brushes/cleaning stuff:£20 approx every 6 months
Grooming: I pay very little and am lucky enough to have an excellent groomer I pay £16 for both mine every 6 weeks

Toys/ball/chews: I spend anything from .99p to £15 for a toy and because Lady is a chewer she goes through a fair ammount.

Food/water bowls: £2-£20 each

Walking/entertainment-: costs nothing but a lot of time and commitment

kennels, I've just booked mine in at £10 a night per dog

collars/leads/tags/chipping: £25 per chip, leads & tags & collars depend on quality

Poo bags: £1 for 50

treats: For training I use Smachos broken up, £2 ish per bag.

It may be expensive but what you get in return is amazing!

Oh yeah forgot about all that. My new van was £3500 plus having the crates added and the wooden boards to protect the back! Garden patio'ed over for easy cleaning around £1k . New roof on the stone outbuildings so I could keep the dog food around £400. And I wander why I'm overdrawn every month!!!

How much does it cost you?
Hi i spend £25 a mnth pet insurance this covers £5000 vet fees with £50 excess thats with tesco and that covers both my dogs.

Food i buy from cash and carrier in bulk so i grt it cheaper about £20 a month on mixer biscuit and £50 on meat. about £20 a month for treats

then you have the outlay of the pup, bed, coller, etc

puppy class just for basic was £35 for course. i trained the rest.

my vet is £19 per visit if its something small and not for my insurance.

then th ltime love to walk and train you friend.

my bills at the moment is litle more as my dalmatian is in pup so i have to cater for that extra.

hsaving said all that i think they are worth every penny i put into them.

as a back up if for somereason its needed i have £1000 in a savings account (never touched it as of yet)
good luck
x

edit i forgot the flea and wormer. i would say in total i spend for 2 dogs £800/900 a year maybe a bit more

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

Someone once asked me how much I thought my dog cost me in his first year, and after having a rough estimate I came to about 4 grand.

Costs included:

Puppy cost
Travelling to breeders a couple of time, so 2 x 4 hour round trips
Crate
Bedding
Toys
Food
Worming
Fleaing
Injections
Microchip
Neutering
Leads
Collars
Name Tags
Training Classes
Vets costs (He was at the vets a LOT the first year)
Nail Clippers
Grooming brushes
Pet insurance

Thats just off the top of my head and most of those apart from the obvious aren't one time expenses.

I now have 2 dogs, had both from puppies, we don't have children & don't plan on having any, both have well paid jobs so we are extravegant with our pooches.

Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

£4000 wow that's quite an expenditure in the first year LOL

Im about to get a puppy myself and while i've done quite a bit of research into what i'll need ie bed, accessories etc kennelling (for holidays), vaccinations, food etc, I haven't really bothered to tot it up. Puppy/child not too much difference (well less costly maybe for the pup). I just keep thinking of all the pleasure it will bring.

Tell me about it He must have go to the vets about 15 times in a 12 month period, most of which was just under or just over the excess of insurance Plus all the training classes every week which we did for over 18 months. He's a bed & toy destroyer too.

Then we did it all again with our girl. Fortunately she's not as sickly as he was, but they still cost a fortune.

Plus we had to change our cars, we both had sports cars so not dog practical, I have had to replace sofa's, flooring, skirting boards, fire place, walls etc from all the puppy damage too.

Would I change a thing??? Hell no! They are my complete and utter world xxx

PARIS&TROY is on a distinguished road
Talking Re: Costs of keeping a dog or puppy

Hi
As everyone has said it can cost a small fortune but they are worth EVERY PENNY!
I suggest that you write out a list using what people have said and do a "dumpy shop". find the vet you will use and ask for the prices on the basics. Jabs etc My vets do a VIP PET CLUB where you can pay for all of the basics, monthly by DD which is a good way of spreading the costs. It also gets us discount off products and some non included treatments plud free microchipping. This might not be the cheapest way to go but makes it easier to swallow!
Lloyds the Pharmacies do most pet products that the vet uses so if you can work out what you need you can get the stuff a LOT CHEAPER directly from them.
As for stuff like beds and crates the classified ads in the papers or Ad mags are a good place to look, CHEAPER to second hand than to shop buy.
Food you need to find a good wholesalers and buy a big bag of dry or packs of tinned. Its cheaper to buy bulk than running down to the corner shop when you have run out of dog food. It's the little bits that add up.
Toys and treats, you can do the charity shops, but buy CAREFULLY you can get old second hand baby toys, NO PLASTIC EYES OR NOSES TO SWALLOW! I see if its safe for a under 3 years its safe for a dog/puppy to rip up and chew in to little pieces! Or go to somewhere like pets at home a big pet store who put seasonal stuff on sale, like christmas toys and treats in January or halloween treats in December? Wilkinson also put their Christmas pet stock on sale, I picked up two half price doggy selection packs with a sale buy date of 01/06/10 which mean you have perfectly good treats for 18months! Puppies don't care what they chew!
As for how much you pay for a dog the sky is the limit, rescues can be the best deal, I believe the RSPCA do a deal where you pay an amount and the puppy is jabbed, wormed, microchipped and you get a voucher for the neutring! It also means the dog will/should have been vet checked!
A LOT of it is will power as sometimes its hard not to spend money on them!
One thing nobodys mentioned is the potential cost of your relationship with your partner as if he DOESN'T WANT A DOG AS MUCH AS YOU it may brake you up. My man took a good 6 months to get over having our two and he bought them both for me! If the dog bonds with you more than him or the dog doesn't see him as more dominant he could get between you and him. Troy the male dog will push himself in between the two of us if we have a kiss and a cuddle. Which start of cute but can develop in to aggressive behavior if not kept in check. Plus there will be times when you will need him to help with the dog.
If that's not scared you off having a dog, you then need to start thinking about Saturday nights out or weekends away never mind holidays! I have a great set of neighbors who have two dogs as well who we can share those times with and a VERY AMAZING MUM, who sits for her grandpuppies if we are out for the night or weekends.
sorry if there is a bit to much information, it lack of information and research that gets dogs and owners in trouble and ends with another dog in a rescue center or worse!
Good luck with the dog and you're defiantly going about it the right way and read both of the dog whisperer books and anything you can get your hands on !
