Another child killed!

I am still surprised that despite media hysteria, people are still leaving babies and young children alond with their with dogs!!! Once again one of the dogs in question was a Bull Terrier, further adding to their fearsome reputation.

Why cannot people realise, that ALL dogs have teeth and are capable of attacking a child. Yes I appreciate that some do more damage than others, but if only people were careful not to leave their dogs unattended around children, attacks could be prevented.

Re: Another child killed!

Hi,

I think considering this has happened before that people would have the common sense NEVER leave a baby on its own with a dog. I just think its so awful for the parents thinking they had just left the little boy with his Grandparents and now he is gone. Every dog has it in them to attack but obviously a three month old baby couldn't possibly defend himself in anyway.

I do feel neglect charges should be brought against the grandmother for plain stupidity!

Izzie

Re: Another child killed!

I stated my feelings about this in the previous thread ...and got PM's left right and centre saying i was in the wrong...

I dont believe dogs attack for no reason unless they are trained fighters or have had bad history...no matter how much i loved a dog I would never leave it with a child, if the dog was not used to the baby/child I would not even have it in the room without a minimum of 2 supervising adults. Anything can spur of their natural instincts...

The child also needs to be supervised, we all know they like to 'explore' pull and poke things, all who have children can varyify this - hair, clothes, skin etc... the dogs, understandably will not take too kindly to this...

I AM NOT SAYING THIS HAPPENS IN ALL CASES BEFORE I GET ANY MORE PM'S - JUST A HIGH MAJORITY!

It is very sad that it has had to happen to another poor child, and more doggys are p2s because adults can not be practical!

Re: Another child killed!

What does it take for people to use their bloody common sence? This isnt the 1st and i doubt it will be the last sad case we read about...But i will NEVER understand why anyone would allow 1 dog let alone 2 near a young baby...
But i hate to think what the parents are going through..How very sad.

Totally agree. Young Children can play very noisily and use their fingers to explore, its just what they do, babies cry. Just a couple of examples why children should be supervised around dogs.

Luika is still going though his biting stage and I have a large bruise on my hand as a result (actually we were playing ball at the time, and he missed the ball). Had he done this to a child the consequences could have been catastrophic.

Re: Another child killed!

Far too many behavioural problems occur due not only to insufficient training, but anthromorphosising our dogs. Dogs are dogs and still have all the natural instincts that a dog has inspite of training. This is a tragedy that should never have happened. A dog and child should never be left unsupervised and a child should be taught very early on how to behave around a dog.

PS Katie - if you have unpleasant pm's - report them. If anyone has a different opinion then they should put it on the thread, not send unpleasant pms.

I partly agree with this comment - and i disagree too.

I mean this baby was 3 1/2 months old! You can't teach a 3 1/2 month old baby how to behave around a dog, they are too young to understand that!

But yes otherwise kids should be taught how to behave around dogs.

No, of course I don't mean you teach a 3 1/2 month baby - but you supervise and don't leave them alone.

I have lost count of the number of times I've read posts saying that a dogs is good with children, the dog allows the child to poke and pull ears etc... This should NEVER be allowed. Dogs are very tolerant but should never be put in that position.

This is a different thread, and a different child is it not?

Re: Another child killed!

i agree.. a child should NEVER be left along with ANY dog no matter of breed but obviously some can do more damage and as an onwer of a powerful breed you should be extra causious, i fell sorry for the parents.
