Making friends??

Hi all, I have had my Bichon puppy for nearly a week now and she is the most gorgeous bundle of fun, there is only one little concern and that is my Mother in laws spaniel x collie he is 10yrs old, (they live with us), he isn't taking to my little Molly, when I say not taking to her he keeps snapping at her when she wants to play, do you think he would hurt her or is he just warning her off until he is in the mood to play. Do you think I am worrying too much and should I just let them get on with it? She is so tiny compared to him but she doesn't seem to be afraid at all.

Re: Making friends??

I think the puppy should be kept away from the older dog some of the time at the moment. The pup is obviously too much for an old dog to cope with.
You wouldn't let a small child pester an old person, you would put down rules, you're pup has to have rules or a barrier between her and the other dog

Re: Making friends??

You have made me feel much better by saying " keep a barrier between them" because if Albi the spaniel is in the room I always put little Molly in her cage, I would rather be safe than sorry. They do touch noses through the crate so I think at this stage they are getting used to one another that way, for a little while anyway. Thanks

Re: Making friends??

I'm sure they'll get on ok in the end, it just needs to be managed. Sounds like you're doing the right thing

Re: Making friends??

the old boy is telling pup to leave him alone little and often contact at first. but pup will learn fast and rules by the old boy telling him off as well. pup will soon know when can play and when not too.
