Question Dogs for beginners

Hello,
We are looking for our first puppy and we would like to know which dogs are good for beginners. We were both brought up with dogs and my mum has 2. So we are very used to dogs but we have never trained one.

My husband loves Border Collies but have been told to avoid until we have trained at least 1 dog successfully. I really like Shih Tzu's, Yorkshire Terriers and Labradors. But we are open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Re: Dogs for beginners

I always suggest Golden Retrievers... make great family dogs and very loyal and gentle IMO

Re: Dogs for beginners

If your looking for a smaller dog, I would say Cavilier King Charles spaniel, Shih Tzu or Bichon.
All really sweet dogs, most love people and other dogs.
The temperment of any dog depends on socialisation and decent breeding.
So what ever you decide on research breeders carefully and take time socialising your puppy.
Best of luck in your search.

Re: Dogs for beginners

tbh I dont see why people are always told Border Collies arent for first timers
do the research , know what to expect

as long as you're aware they are the type of dog that likes tons of exercise and mental stimulation then there shouldnt be a problem

Re: Dogs for beginners

My mother in law got a border collie when hubby was 15 so he knows what they are like but everyone tells we are mad for wanting one.

Re: Dogs for beginners

If you really like Border Collies and understand their needs and know you can meet them. Then why not?
I know a BC wouldn't be for me, with working, 3 kids etc I wouldn't be able to meet a BC's needs. However I love the breed and that's why I'll never own one - if that makes sense
