Housetraining question

I have enquired about an adult Chi/Yorkie mix. I asked if she was housetrained and they said she is not reliable. She is 2.5 years old. My question is this: Do you think it is easier to house train a puppy or an adult. Obviously the adult has got into bad habits and may be difficult to deter. Also, Chis and Yorkies can be difficult to housebreak. Any ideas? By the way, Hi and I love this forum.

Re: Housetraining question

I don't have the answer to your question but we have a Yorkie pup (now 6 months) and he was no problem to toilet train! He also doesn't bark - so maybe he's not a typical Yorkie!

Re: Housetraining question

Having taken on an older dog is the past that had lived its entire life in a kennel ouitside - I would say yhes- for me certainly it was far easier housetraining an adult dog then a puppy.

Re: Housetraining question

It would depend on how willing the dog is to learn.

I fostered a lab x retreiver who was 1.5 and lived in a kennel. She had no idea that she wasn't supposed to pee inside. it only took me 2 weeks to get her100% house trained.

As long as you are constant, and stick to a routine, keep an eye on the dog ie make sure he/she is let out after eating, sleep etc.. just trat as if you would be house training a puppy. And remember, if he pees inside, its not his fauld its yours for not getting the timing right. Never scold a dog for peeing inside as it will make them scared, and toilet training harder.
