dog insurance

Who do you use to insure your dog, and how much is it roughly? I know it will vary for everyone due to age/breed etc.
Cheepest ive found for sheba (GSD) is around £8 using tesco insurance. That anygood?

Re: dog insurance

£8 pounds, thats a good priceis that for the standard type. You need to see what exactly is covered in that. I think the best ones are ones that pay out per illness and not per year.

We pay around £19 per month for our 7 month old GSD from M & S with a £70 excess. if i remember correctly this gives me £7000 per illness

Re: dog insurance

oo. Must read up about that tesco one and check it has everything I want first.
Also, because we only just got the dog, we need to take her to the vets this week, and just get a check up done, check everything is ok etc.
Now, should I get the insurance before we take her to the vets, or does it matter?

Re: dog insurance

Don't be missled into taking on inferior insurance - I was one fooled into thinking that vet fees of £6000pa would be adequate cover.

how wrong was I - look seriously and make sure that you have a 'for life' policy (whick I doubt very much you would get for £8) and NOT an annual policy. check the small print - then check it again - if your still not sure ask!
regards
DT

for a good life plicy - i would expect to be paying a mimimum of £15 pm depending on age and breed

Re: dog insurance

I took put the Tesco insurance and now regret it. For all the little bits and pieces that have cropped up it has been fine but I now have a life long problem with my dog and he is only covered for 12 months, it's going to end up being expensive for me
I would suggest getting the insurance before your visit to the vet cos if they find anything wrong it will not be covered. Having said that, do be careful on the insurance you choose.
There are several other threads on here about the best insurance

Re: dog insurance

I use Tesco for my two and is £26 per month for them both- i made sure they are covered for life as if they have an ongoing illness some companies only pay out for a certain amount, if you cover for life then they pay out for that illness for the rest of the dogs life.

Re: dog insurance

Its prob wrong saying this, but if I took her to the vet, and there was *touch wood* something wrong with her, surely you could go home, get insurance and take her to another vet?? Ill be getting insurance regardless, but can that happen?

No I don't think that would work, cover does not normally start for about month after the date of policy is taken out.
