What are the advantages to this service...surely if my dog was lost he'd only be linked to me if taken in to the vets or animal services? And i know a lot of people keep strays?

So many questions

I would personally get him done.

The advantages of having him chipped are if he's lost and taken to the vets/rescue... the first thing they should do is check for a microchip so they can get in touch with the owner.. and if they get in touch with you right away - means less stress for the dog being somewhere strange...

I've actually done microchipping on dogs before when I worked at a kennels... yes the needle may seem a little big - but it doesn't hurt them, and after a treat and a stroke - they're fine!

My last dog was microchipped... and my future dogs will be too.

P.S sorry if this has been said already, haven't had chance to read everyones post yet!

Re: Microchip or not?

Definitely micro chip, I actually think its irresponsible of an owner not to. Both mine had it done with their second vacs at 10 weeks old and they were more interedted in the treats the vets had put on the table for them.

I have found 2 stray dogs, and both I have had scanned at the local vets and reunited with their owners, so not everyone will just re-home a stray. There was also a story in the paper recently of a dog being reunited with its owner (can't remember if it was months or years) later. Something that would have been impossible to do otherwise.

My dogs are my babies, my family, my life, and I want to make sure I have done everything possible to have them safely returned to me should the worst happen.

Plus a puppy is more likely to be stolen, so waiting really isn't a good idea

Re: Microchip or not?

I agree. All of mine are chipped, so is the cat...even my horse is chipped!! It means not only will you be reunited if the worse does happen, but also it saves so much time and money for rescues!! I had my kitten done at 8 weeks and he was much smaller than most puppies and it didn't bother him so don't worry.

Re: Microchip or not?

I'm definately going to be getting my pup microchipped.

I'm already very paranoid about Dixie walking around the house without her collar on (my OH takes it off sometimes to give her a neck massage! or after a bath) she NEVER goes out without it on- even if she never leaves the garden (even when the gate is open) but I would kill myself if she wandered off and no one knew who she was.

She is microchipped anyway, and our local dog warden has a chip scanner, as does the police station and all vets in the area.

My dog, although is an odd cross.. all three of her same marked brothers/sisters live close so she is not that unique.. someone stealing her could easily claim she was one of the other littermates, it would be easily clarified with chip.
