Red face Oscar had an accidental off-lead experience!

I'm not confident with Oscar's recall yet so he runs on the long lead. Today (in the park), we're nearly at the exit, when he suddenly starts going mad and running like a loony in circles (he does this when he's tired) until he's at the end of line and SNAP........off he goes! Of course, this is very exciting for a 6 month old puppy - so much freedom! He runs and run in circles - not very far away but extremely fast. I'm in a panic, calling him and he will come but not close enough to let me get hold of him. Finally, I manage and his name tag has fallen off. I must have accidently clipped the lead to the name tag instead of the loop on his collar! I picked him up, he yawned and snuggled in so I carried him home. Bless! I'm not sure who had the fastest heartbeat; him or me!

Re: Oscar and his accidental off-lead experience!!! Scary!

Ah bless,
Bet you were panicking, it's so scary when things happen unexpectedly like that. I know I've clipped the lead to the tag by mistake before, think I've just been lucky, it's easily done.
Never mind you both got home safe.

I am fully recovered, thank you! Oscar clearly enjoyed himself - he's still muddy and smelly! I went to the pet shop and they said the lead is fine and that I clipped it to the name tag instead of the loop. I have ordered a new tag. I shall be checking more carefully in future! It's very easily done.

Re: Oscar and his accidental off-lead experience!!! Scary!

I hate it when this happens

Loads of shoots go on in our village so their are guns going off literally everyday. Bess is scared of them, so if one goes off close she will leg it. She used to run all the way home which was a disaster, now she stops when i call.

She used to run in circles like that too, annoyed me especially near gates that open on to the road

Re: Oscar and his accidental off-lead experience!!! Scary!

I am glad hes safe, I had done this with my Pei. I was told to use a Cable tie to fasten the tags on. I have clipped Chances lead on to the o-ring and I have also have the spring clip get stuck around the o-ring. Chance is currently modeling a black cable tied tag on his.

Re: Oscar and his accidental off-lead experience!!! Scary!

Must have been scarey for you - if you have problems with recall it is best to keep him of a long lead and keep installing this. (I have read Rona - and know that the dog came unclipped). I know it sounds hard but if this happens again if you run in the opposite direction chances are (fingers crossed) he'll follow you. If you chase after him he'll think it's a game a run even more.
regards
DT
