Re: Oscar and his accidental off-lead experience!!! Scary!

Glad you caught him I've done this before. I've gone and bought a collar online that has a seperate bit for attachin the tag cos the lead i used had a bad habit of getting caught on the ring for the tag.. and at £8.50 for the tag i dont want to lose it!! lol (rediculous really when you can get them on ebay for a couple of quid- but its a really thick one with a purple heart and deep engraving. lol)

Gem
I use a whistle too - well actually - I whistle myself - my 4 year old was 100% - my 7 year old - hit and miss - my pupster - is 100% in and around the garden - but out thats a different tale - so I have gone back to a training lead - BUT - because I whistle myself the dogs are used to the tone - if someone else is walking them they do not respond - I recently brought an Acme 212 (and I was having great results with that prior to breaking my elbow - but - now we have lost it)
regards
Sue

I've used a whistle for years, the dogs can hear it better than the human voice and if you are in a park with lots of voices it's sound is distinctive.
If you train to a whistle, always make sure you have two as they are easy to lose and can take several days to replace, it seems when you go to replace one, everybody else has lost theirs at the same time

and to add it's worth remebering that whistles have different tones - hence the acmes are I believe preferred by many

I'm going to keep practicing his recall. I do have a whistle. He will come back but he's not 100% and he took this opportunity to NOT come back. I think it was because I was panicked and desperate, he definitley thought it was a game. I am going to try properly with his recall but when I've planned it and not with a sudden disappearing, running dog!

pettpaintings is on a distinguished road
Re: Oscar had an accidental off-lead experience!

Phew Glad you got him back safely I would agree with double trouble and if it happens again run in the opposite direction and he'll be more likely to follow as he won't want to lose you!!!
