Prospective puppy owner (Vizsla) - opinions/advice please
Hi, were thinking of getting a puppy, specifically a Vizsla but before taking the plunge i'm interested in opinions on this, ultimately we dont want to be looking at rehoming a dog in the future and feel that others views may help.
I work 5 and a half days a week, my other half 3 days and we have a daughter who is 2 in January and adores dogs,we would both love our daughter to grow up with a dog as we both did but dont want to take the plunge if its not right. I appreciate the Vizsla is energetic and would have no problem walking him both before and after work, however we do worry when we read the breed can suffer with anxiety issues when alone, i know theres lots of other dog owners who do work but we must think of whats right for the animal. We have read lots of info on the breed on the net, books and have spoken to owners and trainers at the local puppy school and have also met a vizsla from the same breeder that we hope to purchase from (Gazven Hungarian Vizslas) and feel that whilst obviously lively they are a truely beautiful dog with the characteristics we desire. Any thoughts/opinions on whether we should go ahead would be welcomed... Thanks Last edited by jj46; 19-12-2008 at 10:18 PM.. |

Re: Prospective puppy owner - opinions/advice please
thanks for the welcome guys, whilst it would be great to hear from Vizsla owners were just as interested on peoples views as to wether it would be fair for us to take on any dog due to our work hours and young family

Re: Prospective puppy owner - opinions/advice please
Ok as I said I don't know anything about this breed other than they are very high energy, but I'll tell you what I did when we got our pups.
I have 2 small mixed breed dogs - they probably the complete opposite of a Vizsla - they are now 23 and 10 months and we've had them both from 8 weeks. Neither myself nor my husband had been bought up with animals but our family decided we should have a dog ![]() Because we didn't have previous experience and we have 3 kids we waited until the youngest was 10 to make our lives easier. When we bought Zipper home I had 2 weeks off work, then Hubby was home 3 weeks, then the kids had 2 weeks easter hols, then I took another week off. This gave us plenty of time to bond and most importantly toilet train ![]() By this time Zipper was 16 weeks, My eldest was taking her GCSE's so she was home a lot between exams then we hit the summer so Zipper wasn't left for more than 3 hours until he was 8 months (we are now up to september and we bought him in feb). Then from September to November I popped home at lunch time for 20mins. So he had plenty of time to settle in. My Husband works away and I work 3 days a week - so the dogs are left now for 6 hours 3 days a week and are fine. I walk them for 20 mins before work, the kids take the out for 20/30 mins straight after school and then I take them out for 45 mins when I get in from work. Not sure if this helps but this is what we did - we wanted to spend as much time as possible toilet training and ensuring we didn't have any probs with seperation anxiety. I would also say puppy classes are essential - for socialisation for the puppy and support for yourselves ![]() |

Re: Prospective puppy owner - opinions/advice please
Personally - reading you circumstances - I would not not even consider a Vizsla if I were in your shoes - They are lovely dogs , but high energy, that need stimulating both mentally and physically, thre are loads and loads of other ddogs out there that would fit into your regime - thants my opinion - but at the end of the day the decision is yours.
all the best |

Re: Prospective puppy owner - opinions/advice please
Hi, I have a Vizsla! is this your first dog? They r absolutly gorgeous but need lots of attention. Unlike you I did not look into what breed to get properly, my friend had a small viz that I loved to look after but she was the only one I new. I do have young children too which probably doesnt help my situation much! I do love my Viz to bits, but she needs so much attention! She's so affectionate and loyal, if you are able to devote LOADS of your time to your dog then this is a breed to go for.
If you get one or have got one by now, let me know how you get on! Eva and Maisy-moo! |

Re: Prospective puppy owner - opinions/advice please
Hi, I did not read your post fully, to be honest I do not think a Vizsla would be suitable, unless you would consider getting an older one, maybe 3 years. I do not work and I have to walk Maisy twice a day and when at home she wants my attentention all the time, even now she is licking my face and nudging me!
It was an absolute nightmare with her and my 2 year old as she was constently knocking her over its getting a bit better now tho! Please consider your decision seriously. I rushed into it a bit and altho I love Maisy to bits and would never consider giving her up, if I had that decision to make again I would have chosen something smaller and less energetic! Hope that helps you, and good luck finding the right pup for you. Eva |
