Even pet sitters are discriminating!

I was extremely concerned, to hear that some pet sitting companies will not send their sitters to people with certain breeds, including Rottie's, GSD's and in some cases Bull Terriers.

Having spoken with an extremely distraught lady, asking if we care for Rottie's, since two of the companies she had approached, had refused to help, given her breed of dog.

I assured her that we placed our sitters according to their physical abilities and experience, and do not discriminate. Obviously we would not place one of our older sitters with a large dog, but this made me wonder, if other pet related oganisations, such as dog crèches, kennels, or groomers also had a discrimination policy

Re: Even pet sitters are discriminating!

yeah some do, not like me as i assess each dog before they come to stay, no matter what breed they are.

Re: Even pet sitters are discriminating!

No area in our life is safe from discrimination anymore is it.

Imagine if a nursery said i wont take your child because he is called X and I have heard that kids called X are not nice....same thing really!

The world is going mad

Re: Even pet sitters are discriminating!

It isn't fair to discriminate because of breed, however it may be that these companies may have no people suitable or willing to look after certain breeds of dogs, as Nina stated they wouldn't place a Rottie with an older sitter.

maybe they think that guarding breeds would cause a problem if them as a stranger enters the house?

Re: Even pet sitters are discriminating!

We always do a pre visit since both client and sitter have to feel comfortable before confirming each is happy to proceed.

Yes, we have sitters that do not feel comfortable caring for larger breeds and some have a dislike of rodents, so we do place each according to experience and capabilities. But to discriminate in this way is completely wrong.

We have a number of larger, guarding breeds on our books, as well as Staffies, and all have lovely characters. It has certainly opened my eyes.

No it wont be that.. it'll be what they have heard in the media and assuming they are all aggressive.

It's so annoying.. that people who like animals ie pet sitters can make a sweeping judgement on a breed.

Re: Even pet sitters are discriminating!

I used to asses each dog before it came to stay for the elected time period and see how it coped in my house,
I did have a lady ask me to look after 2 rotties 1 bitch and 1 dog and the only reason I said no was because my bitch at the time was in season and I didn't want any fights etc, I turned down boarders of all shapes and sizes for a month so it wasn't just the rotties I said no to.
My most difficult boarder was a jack russell of all things and the bigger the dog the easier they have been x

I dont see guarding as aggression but ur right, it really might be the media and maybe people are simply scared that if something happens, then of course it would cause alot of damage.

But then surely they could judge the dog after seeing it and not before.
