Re: Scabby Paws Help!?

Has it been snowy where you are? Ive heard that the salt they put down can make paws sore.

Lightbulb Frequent Inspection.

Do not take this as a personal attack but I really think you might consider what your role as dog owner is. Our three dog get the once over inspection at least every other day, which includes paws/toes. Often as part of grooming which can just mean a few minutes with a metal comb during which we look for marks on the skin; scratches from the field or ticks etc.

All the dogs submit for inspection at random when we are out walking to pick up something like a thorn in-situ if it were to occur, the point mostly being that the dogs are used to being inspected so when there is a problem that the process of poking in-between toes or teeth etc is normal because it happens every day.

In this weather it might be due to the combination of grit (small sharp stones) and salt on the roads/paths. I suggest a magnifying glass might be useful her.

Depending on how bad the scabs are you might first wash the affected area with dilute Dettol so you are not sealing in infection/dirt with a layer of cream. I would suggest using Germolene as it provides a mild local anaesthetic effect, however if the dog is licking the paw then a Catherine Collar can be made quickly with plastic sheet and a normal dog collar, a two litre plastic coke bottle can be opened out and shaped accordingly in an emergency.

Hope the dog recovers quickly (a week I would expect) and that you include paws in your inspection of the dog at least every other day. Places to pay attention to include in the arm pits where a grass seed can stick leading to infection, the tail and bum.
