Quick question about barking

Bryson has recently picked up the nasty habit of barking, all the time, and it is driving me bonkers! And this has lead to a bit of a conflict between my bf and me on how to deal with it... I try clicker training, when he barks tell him quiet and when he goes quiet I click and treat, my bf thinks this is causing him to bark more for treats... What is your oppinion and how can I deal with his damn barking in the best way, I'm going crazy and it's only ben 2 days since he picked up his nasty habit...

He usedto bark in the morning for his brekkie (I stop and ignore him till he stops then continue getting it ready) but now he barks at his toys while playing at them, barks at us when we leave the room and he's playing, at us if we're on the sofa and he wants to play, at us if we're eating something and he wants some (he has never been fed off our plates or from anything that we are eating)....

Re: Quick question about barking

Tink used to be a bit of a barky puppy. Whenever she barked when i was preparing her food. I'd stopthen go and sit down. If I was sitting on the sofa in the evening and she barked as she wanted to play or thought it was time for a walk I'd get up and leave the room. If she started barking when I returned, I'd leave again. It's a pain in the posterior to do, but it worked for us.

Good luck Bryson sounds like a bright spark with plenty to teach you
Dogless and Dotte like this.

Finnley can be the same and I do pretty much as said above, I just ignore it until he stops, then continue with the food.. He is slowly getting it.
It's just the barking when people or cars go past house when they are in the garden that drives me nuts, as worried about it upsetting neighbours?? Not sure how to deal with it then.

Naughty Step.

Isolation. Have a place (utility room?) where you have fixed a metal chain, when the dog barks he is taken there, no cooing or attempts at soothing etc. the dog will not like this and will probably bark for the first few times. But calm consistent repetition will show that dog that barking does not gain attention or the thing he seeks but isolation from the family. Ten minutes is probably enough.

Use a metal chain not a normal lead as the dog might attempt to chew to get free.

Re: Quick question about barking

Hehe thanks, I know I keep saying it, but what would I do without this forum?!

No he dosent bark at anything outside, it's just at his toys and at us, he doesnt even care if the doorbell rings I'm gonna try the leaving the room when he barks at me when I'm alone and when my bf is there I prob have to isolate him cuz my bf wouldnt be bothered hehe, so much support when it comes to dog training would that be too inconsistent or would that be ok?

hehe ah he's a clever little bugger, he's just so high energy and I just feel so out of my dept sometimes, I want to train him properly and do him right but he keeps makin sure that the issues we have with him are hard to fix

I only wish I could do that with Dillon, if I try catch him to take him out of the room I just can't he's far to fast agile, then he thinks it's a game.
